These vintage glass-plate and acetate negatives were taken from the early 1900s through the 1950s, and they have been largely unseen for generations. That is because most have never been published, only having been witnessed by the photographers and police in the moments after an arrest, crime, or even murder. Included are graphic crime scenes, raw evidence, and depictions of searing emotions, captured on film during a time when photographers were given unprecedented access alongside police. Some photographs resemble film noir movie stills. Some are cartoonish. All feature real people, real drama, and real crimes. Accompanying information about each is included wherever possible, often with archived news stories.  Gangsters & Grifters is a powerful, visually stunning look back into the dark story of Chicago’s nefarious crime underworld.   N B C University Theater -...

  'NBC University Theater’ initially started in Chicago with a remit to bring adaptations of classic novels, usually Anglo-American, to a radio audience. 
  Additionally, if listeners signed up they received college credit to a radio-assisted correspondence course.  A study guide, The Handbook of the World's Great Novels, was available for 25 cents. 
  In its later years it also included short stories and plays and went on to win the distinguished Peabody award. 
  Unlike many other radio shows University Theatre did not pursue the glamourous stars for its productions but instead relied on excellent distillations of the novels and first class acting alongside high production values. 
  But now its time to enjoy these timeless novels. Let’s begin.

  Big-Screen Drive-In Theater

  The drive-in is dying. People can blame the demise on cable television, luxury theaters with sound systems so technical NASA engineers are needed to install them, or on a host of other modern conveniences and distractions. In reality, the drive-in operator of the Sulpher Springs Big-Screen Drive-In Theater hired a young Donald Davis to work his high school summers there. Employment at the Sulpher Springs Big-Screen Drive-In Theater consisted of working the concession stand, catching "slip-ins", and patrolling the back row to learn about love and life. The theater survives Davis and his friends' summer hijinks until Labor Day. When the last movie, The Guns of Navarrone, is almost over, and the theater could be closed for the winter, Davis and his crew find a way to close it down forever.
