Synopsis

In "Motor Matt's Red Flyer; or, On the High Gear," Stanley R. Matthews enthralls readers with a thrilling tale deeply rooted in the early 20th-century fascination with mechanization and adventure. The narrative follows Motor Matt, an intrepid young protagonist who embarks on gripping escapades across the American landscape, driven by the momentum of his dynamic spirit and the allure of his trusty Red Flyer. Matthews employs a distinctive blend of vivid descriptions and engaging dialogue that exemplifies the style typical of juvenile fiction in the period, positioning the book within the larger cultural context of American optimism and technological progress between the World Wars. Stanley R. Matthews, a prominent figure in early children's literature, was influenced by his own childhood experiences and the burgeoning automobile culture of his time. His passion for storytelling and a desire to inspire young minds led him to create characters like Motor Matt that embodied courage, ingenuity, and adventure. This work serves not only as entertainment but also as a reflection of the values and aspirations of a rapidly evolving society during the early 1900s. "Motor Matt's Red Flyer; or, On the High Gear" is highly recommended for readers seeking to immerse themselves in a bygone era marked by adventure and mechanical wonder. This book is a delightful exploration of youth, ingenuity, and the spirit of adventure, making it a perfect read for both children and adults who appreciate the classic themes of resilience and excitement.

Jack Neuman came to Wyoming as a fifteen-year-old orphan. He lodged with Crazy Horse and his Lakota tribe. He later scouted for the U.S. Army. Lonesome for company, Jack brought out his childhood sweetheart from Minnesota, Heather and married her, but his devotion was on destroying the bad guys, not his marriage and his beautiful young wife broke his heart. He teamed up with Calamity Jane and D. Boone May. With their gallant exploits, they were elevated to legendary heroes. Their duties found them involved in at least 8 shootouts with road agents and almost as many with hostile Sioux. They shot it out with the Frank Towles Gang after they tried robbing a stage coach near Old Woman’s Creek in Wyoming. They captured Archie McLaughlin, Billy Mansfield and their fellow gang members. They were intercepted by vigilantes who lynched McLaughlin and Mansfield. They shot and wounded the robber Tom Price while bringing them in. Boone May shot down frequent stage robber Curley Grimes. Ambros Bierce, in his days as a stage coach guard, was riding with May when they saved a $30,000 gold shipment from outlaws. Later, Bierce would memorialize the events in the tale A Sole Survivor.

Since the Battle of Little Bighorn, George Armstrong Custer (1839-1876) possessed one of the most unique places in American history. Although he was a capable cavalry officer who served honorably during the Civil War, he remains one of the most instantly identifiable and famous military men in American history due to the fact he was killed during one of the country’s most well known and ignominious defeats, the Battle of Little Bighorn. And yet, this one relatively insignificant battle during America’s Indian Wars has become one of the country’s most mythologized events and continues to fascinate Americans nearly 140 years later. Though he’s now best remembered for “Custer’s Last Stand”, Custer mastered the art of public relations, dressing impeccably and having newspaper correspondents accompany him on the campaign, all in an effort to help cultivate and enhance his legacy. For nearly 58 years, Elizabeth Bacon Custer was probably the most famous widow in the world. In this lively, fascinating, loving portrait of life on the plains with her already-famous husband, Libbie tells a civilized audience of the excitement, fun, and perils endured at a remote frontier post. Intelligent and beautiful, Libbie was a partner, confidant, and booster to the general, as well as an important figure in the social life of the posts he commanded. This book has been used as source material on the general's life as well as the frontier army for well over a century. Celebrated among the prominent people of her day, Libbie never remarried after Custer's death at the Little Bighorn in 1876. She spent the rest of her life writing and lecturing about him, burnishing his reputation and keeping his memory alive. Long a jewel of western Americana, this book continues to find and entertain new audiences in the 21st century.

A beautiful story following two troubled men, separated by nearly a century, bound by the ghosts of their past
When George Allenby is put in charge of building a lake in the grounds of an imposing Irish manor house, he intends to do the job as swiftly as possible and return to Belfast. Allenby is still wrestling with his time as an officer during the First World War, burdened by the many things he could have done differently.
Almost a century later, Alex and Ellie are preparing for their wedding, sparing no expense to hire a venue overlooking the very lake Allenby built all those years ago.
Like Allenby before him, Alex is haunted by decisions he made in the past. Now, with the wedding drawing ever closer, he is at a crossroads. Telling the truth might free him from his guilt; it might also take away everything he cares about, including Ellie.
In this masterful portrait of love and betrayal, David Park reveals the many ways the past seeps into the present: destructive, formidable, but also hopeful, in the moments of fragile beauty that remain.
