Beschreibung

Whispers of Canvas and Flame is a soulful field guide that blends practical outdoor wisdom with mindful reflection. Born from years of camping and journaling, the book invites readers—whether families, solo trekkers, or dog lovers—into the transformative power of the wild. Each chapter pairs hands-on guidance (like cold-weather layering, first-aid kits, dog-friendly tips, and campfire cooking) with deeper insights on connection, wonder, and presence. From sunrise meditations to starlit games, from snow-bound stillness to laughter by the fire, this is not a how-to manual but a heartfelt invitation to return to what matters. With accessible tools and gentle stories, the book teaches readers to pitch tents with care, share meals with gratitude, and listen to nature’s quiet teachings. More than adventure, it's about belonging—to land, to each other, and to ourselves. The wild, it reminds us, is not just out there—it is waiting, patiently, for us to show up fully.

The Men Return by Jack Vance - Alpha caught a handful of air, a globe of blue liquid, a rock, kneaded them together....
The Relict came furtively down the crag, a shambling gaunt creature with tortured eyes. He moved in a series of quick dashes, using panels of dark air for concealment, running behind each passing shadow, at times crawling on all fours, head low to the ground. Arriving at the final low outcrop of rock, he halted and peered across the plain.
Far away rose low hills, blurring into the sky, which was mottled and sallow like poor milk-glass. The intervening plain spread like rotten velvet, black-green and wrinkled, streaked with ocher and rust. A fountain of liquid rock jetted high in the air, branched out into black coral. In the middle distance a family of gray objects evolved with a sense of purposeful destiny: spheres melted into pyramids, became domes, tufts of white spires, sky-piercing poles; then, as a final tour de force, tesseracts.
The Relict cared nothing for this; he needed food and out on the plain were plants. They would suffice in lieu of anything better. They grew in the ground, or sometimes on a floating lump of water, or surrounding a core of hard black gas. There were dank black flaps of leaf, clumps of haggard thorn, pale green bulbs, stalks with leaves and contorted flowers. There were no recognizable species, and the Relict had no means of knowing if the leaves and tendrils he had eaten yesterday would poison him today.
He tested the surface of the plain with his foot. The glassy surface (though it likewise seemed a construction of red and gray-green pyramids) accepted his weight, then suddenly sucked at his leg. In a frenzy he tore himself free, jumped back, squatted on the temporarily solid rock.

When Grief first arrives, it is an elephant—so big that there is hardly room for anything else. But over time, Grief becomes smaller and smaller—first a deer, a fox, then a mouse, and finally a flickering firefly in the darkness leading us down a path of loving remembrance.
This lyrical work is an empathetic and comforting balm for anyone experiencing grief—whether the loss of a loved one or the losses in the world around us. Its heartfelt message reminds us that there is no loss without love.

'We've done more than our share to see you right, but you're a Hershey, a true son of a dreamer,' Milton's Uncle Abraham said. 'You'll never stick with anything long enough to make it work for you.' Milton gulped. He'd already suspected that his relatives had given up on him succeeding as a candy maker, but the words still stung. When Milton Hershey's famous Hershey Bars debuted in 1905, few people knew of the hard work, dedication, and sacrifice preceding the triumph. Debt, lack of support, and fatigue had been constant companions for the famous chocolatier and philanthropist -- a man with a fourth-grade education. Despite comparisons to his wandering father, Milton never gave up. Learning from his mistakes, he spent a lifetime creating sweet things to eat -- first caramel, then chocolate. As his company soared, Milton used his wealth to care for others, founding a town for Hershey workers, a school for children in need, and a foundation dedicated to education, culture, and health care.
