Beschreibung

In "Selections from the Writings of Kierkegaard," readers are invited to explore a curated compilation of the existential musings and philosophical inquiries of one of the most profound thinkers of the 19th century. The book showcases Kierkegaard's distinctive literary style, blending poetic language with rigorous introspection. Through an array of essays, aphorisms, and reflections, it uncovers the concept of individuality, faith, and the anxiety of choice. The selections illustrate his critical response to the norms of the established church and society, providing insight into themes of subjectivity and the angst inherent in the human condition. Søren Kierkegaard, often considered the father of existentialism, wrestled with questions of existence, faith, and the nature of selfhood. His unique approach emerged from a context steeped in the theological and philosophical currents of his time, particularly reacting against Hegelian philosophy and the cultural mediocrity of the Danish church. Kierkegaard's personal struggles, including his poignant relationship with the philosopher Regine Olsen, inform many of the themes present in his writings, allowing him to convey profound emotional depth alongside intellectual rigor. This collection is highly recommended for anyone seeking to understand the complexities of human existence and the philosophical underpinnings of modern thought. Kierkegaard's timeless insights resonate deeply, challenging readers to confront their own beliefs and choices. Perfect for scholars and casual readers alike, this book serves as an essential introduction to existential philosophy and the questions that define our lives.

Wilson provides a comprehensive account of the American Navy's role on the Atlantic Coast of France during the First World War. The book details the operational methods, which relied heavily on cooperation between the Allied forces, particularly with the French naval service. It outlines the initial phases where American forces, under Rear Admiral W. B. Fletcher and later Admiral Henry B. Wilson, operated primarily with auxiliary craft like yachts and mine-sweepers, before being augmented by destroyers.

This is the untold story of Britain's role in the Israel–Palestine conflict. During the First World War, the British High Commissioner in Egypt reached a secret agreement with the Sharif of Mecca. If the Sharif allied with Britain against the Ottomans, after the war an independent Arab state that included Palestine would be established. The Sharif kept his word. The British did not. Instead, two years later Lloyd George's government declared that Palestine would be for the global Jewish community. Through meticulous analysis of official records and private papers, Peter Shambrook exposes how Britain came to betray the Arabs. He debunks the myth that Palestine was never part of the lands guaranteed to the Sharif and details the attempts of successive British governments to prevent the truth from ever becoming public. For anyone interested in the history of the Israel–Palestine conflict, this is a must-read.

In virtually all fields of human endeavor, ancient Greece was so much at the forefront of dynamism and innovation that the products of its most brilliant minds remain not only influential but entirely relevant to this day. The great philosophers of Athens, men like Aristotle, Socrates, and Plato, interrogated themselves with startling complexity about the nature of good and evil, questioned the existence of divinity, advocated intelligent design, and went so far as to argue that all life was composed of infinitesimal particles.
Although the school of philosophy started by Socrates and championed by Plato and Aristotle continues to be the most famous, other schools of thought began to branch, including the Epicureans and Cynics. In the 3rd century B.C., Stoicism arose in response to and under the influence of these older schools, combining many of the best theories from each into a more cohesive whole. With a greater flexibility and more practical application to everyday life, Stoicism quickly became a very popular school of thought, a growth made exponential by its introduction to the Romans.
Today, very few have heard of him, but he became a major philosophical and religious figure through the publication of his thoughts, travels, and miracles by Philostratus the Elder (c. 170-247 A.D.), written about a century after Apollonius of Tyana’s death. Philostratus the Elder’s works were based on the works of other writers (Maximus of Aegae, Damis, and Moeragenes), and miracles attributed to Apollonius were often compared to those of Jesus, who lived around the same time. Apollonius’s cult was important throughout the whole of the Pagan era and even carried on into the Middle Ages. Why such an important philosopher has been so forgotten by modern historians is in itself an interesting issue, and it is just as crucial to understand what Apollonius preached and the information he provided about his contemporary world.

On January 20, 1981, Reagan began his first presidential inauguration address by thanking Carter for his “gracious cooperation in the transition process”.
Reagan notes “one of the worst sustained inflations in our national history. It distorts our economic decisions, penalizes thrift, and crushes the struggling young and the fixed-income elderly alike.” “In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem.”
“For decades we have piled deficit upon deficit, mortgaging our future and our children's future for the temporary convenience of the present.” “It is my intention to curb the size and influence of the Federal establishment and to demand recognition of the distinction between the powers granted to the Federal Government and those reserved to the States or to the people.”
“If we look to the answer as to why for so many years we achieved so much, prospered as no other people on Earth, it was because here in this land we unleashed the energy and individual genius of man to a greater extent than has ever been done before.” “It is time to reawaken this industrial giant, to get government back within its means, and to lighten our punitive tax burden.”
“As for the enemies of freedom, … [w]e will maintain sufficient strength to prevail if need be, knowing that if we do so we have the best chance of never having to use that strength.”
“[T]ogether with God's help we can and will resolve the problems which now confront us. And after all, why shouldn't we believe that? We are Americans. God bless you, and thank you.
