Sinossi

The Immigrant Experience: 5 Classic Books on Immigrant Lives offers an in-depth exploration of the diverse narratives that shape America's immigrant tapestry. This anthology captures the multifaceted nature of immigrant stories, spanning a range of literary styles from memoir to sociological study. Each work featured in the collection serves as a piece of a larger narrative, depicting the complexities of assimilation, identity, and resilience. The diversity of perspectives ensures that the anthology speaks to both the universal and the personal, presenting standout pieces that reveal the nuanced challenges and triumphs of immigrant life. The contributing authors, Edward Alsworth Ross, Broughton Brandenburg, Edward Alfred Steiner, Howard B. Grose, and Sophonisba Preston Breckinridge, bring their exceptional insights to this collection. Each author, with their unique background, contributes richly to the theme. As pioneers and thinkers from the early 20th century, they collectively engaged with the cultural and social undercurrents of their time that shaped the immigrant experience. These works resonate with historical relevance, aligning with significant movements such as progressivism and the human rights advocacy that marred and shaped their era's discourse. Readers are invited to move beyond singular narratives to understand the immigrant experience's vast landscape through this anthology. The collection’s diversity of perspectives provides an invaluable opportunity to situate oneself amid different worlds and eras. Readers seeking to enhance their understanding of the multifaceted immigrant story will find this collection both educational and thought-provoking, as it seeks to foster a dialogue that is as enduring as it is inclusive.

America's political landscape is experiencing dangerous polarization and fragmentation, with the extremes pulling the country apart. Voices on the left and right clash over different worldviews, definitions of America, and what it means to be an American citizen. The levels of incivility and hostility lead some to invoke the language of a cold civil war or even a looming civil war: one that could split the country in two. Is there any way to step back from this dangerous precipice?
Political philosopher Jim Belcher shows that this is not merely a binary opposition between conservativism on the right and liberalism on the left, but also between conflicting visions of order and freedom on both sides. Through his unique quadrant framework, Belcher traces the people and movements in each position, examines their underlying narratives, and articulates their respective contributions and dangers. This quadrant framework not only reveals how polarization divides us but also shows us how to move beyond the right-left stalemate.
At the core of the competing visions are the seeds of a new vital center, a robust and surprising model that has the ability to transcend political tribalism and bring America back together again before it is too late.

Go behind the scenes of the Great White Way with this illustrated guide to the Theater District’s hidden history--an essential book for your explorations of the district from a seasoned Broadway guide. Broadway is one of New York’s greatest treasures, and where there is treasure, there is a backstory. When it comes to Broadway, that backstory is fittingly juicy, dramatic, and unexpected. And no one knows these hidden histories like Teale Dvornik, who has been leading Broadway fans on tours of the theater district since 2017. With her immense knowledge and passion for the theater, Dvornik now takes readers on her one-of-a-kind tour of Broadway, “stopping” at each of the 41 theaters to tell us fun facts, lesser-known history, ghost tales, and interesting stories about actors, performances, stage flukes, blunders, and more, involving the biggest names and productions in theater history.  Learn about the Tiffany chandeliers of the Belasco Theater, the trove of hidden jewels at the Gershwin (which houses years of history from the beloved musical Wicked), and the impresarios and players who influenced Broadway. Readers will also learn the fascinating back stories of theater myths, legends, and traditions. Where did the stage ghost light come from? What started the tradition of intermissions? Which theaters have secret connecting hallways? And much, much more!  Along the way, Teale takes detours to explain stage lingo and dives into some of Broadways most popular shows, including CATS, Hello, Dolly!, and Rent.

During the first World War, over a million Armenians were killed as Ottoman Turks embarked on a bloody campaign of ethnic cleansing. Scholars have long described these massacres as genocide, one of Hitler's prime inspirations for the Holocaust, yet the United States did not officially recognize the Armenian Genocide until 2021.

This is the first book to examine how and why the United States refused to acknowledge the Armenian Genocide until the early 2020s. Although the American government expressed sympathy towards the plight of the Armenians in the 1910s and 1920s, historian Julien Zarifian explores how, from the 1960s, a set of geopolitical and institutional factors soon led the United States to adopt a policy of genocide nonrecognition which it would cling to for over fifty years, through Republican and Democratic administrations alike. He describes the forces on each side of this issue: activists from the US Armenian diaspora and their allies, challenging Cold War statesmen worried about alienating NATO ally Turkey and dealing with a widespread American reluctance to directly confront the horrors of the past. Drawing from congressional records, rare newspapers, and interviews with lobbyists and decision-makers, he reveals how genocide recognition became such a complex, politically sensitive issue.

A pedagogical primer on integrating Black feminist thought, critical race studies, and America's most beloved pop star.

In 2010—long before the release of Lemonade—Professor Kevin Allred created the university course "Politicizing Beyoncé" to both wide acclaim and controversy. He outlines his pedagogical philosophy in Ain't I a Diva?, exploring the process of teaching Beyoncé and what it means to use a superstar to blow up the canon. Allred brings his syllabus to life by pairing music videos and songs with historical and academic texts, and combines analysis with classroom anecdotes. Topics range from a capitalist critique of "Run the World (Girls)" to the politics of self-care found in "Flawless"; Beyoncé's art is read alongside Black feminist thinkers, including Kimberlé Crenshaw, Octavia Butler, and Sojourner Truth.

Interrogating the entertainer's career through a media studies lens, Allred attests that pop culture is so much more than a guilty pleasure—it's an access point for education, entertainment, critical inquiry, and politics.
