  World Set Free The (Unabridged)

  This chilling, futuristic novel, written in 1913 and first published the following year, was incredibly prophetic on a major scale. Wells was a genius and visionary, as demonstrated by many of his other works, but this book is clearly one of his best. He predicts nuclear warfare years before research began and describes the chain reactions involved and the resulting radiation. He describes a weapon of enormous destructive power, used from the air that would wipe out everything for miles, and actually used the term "atomic bombs." This book may have been at least part of the original inspiration for the development of atomic weapons, as well as presenting many other ideas that would ultimately come to pass. Some ideas may still be coming, including a one-world government referred to as The World Republic, that will attempt to end all wars.

  "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" is one of the best-known stories written by American author Washington Irving. Set in the Dutch settlement of Tarry Town, New York, in a secluded glen called Sleepy Hollow, it tells the story of Ichabod Crane, a lanky and superstitious schoolmaster. Crane is enamored with the beautiful Katrina Van Tassel but must contend with a rival suitor, Brom Bones. After attending a party at Katrina's home, Crane encounters the ghostly figure of the Headless Horseman, rumored to be the ghost of a Hessian soldier who lost his head in battle and now roams the area. The tale is rich with folklore, humor, and a sense of the supernatural, capturing the eerie atmosphere of a colonial American village.

  In a small town far out West, 11-year-old Pollyanna loses her mother and then her dad to disease.   Eleanor H. Porter,  American novelist, and creator of the Pollyanna series of books generated a popular phenomenon. Hodgman studied singing at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. She gained a local reputation as a singer in concerts and church choirs and continued her singing career after her marriage. By 1901, however, she had abandoned music in favor of writing. Her stories began appearing in numerous popular magazines and newspapers, and in 1907 she published her first novel
