Synopsis

Sixties Slow Down explores the science of aging, particularly focusing on the benefits of adjusting one's lifestyle to the natural rhythms of later life. It examines the psychological impact of societal expectations, the biological realities of aging, and the advantages of consciously slowing down. The book argues that society often pressures older adults to maintain an unsustainable pace, detrimental to their health. By understanding the changes inherent in aging, individuals can enhance their well-being and cognitive function. For instance, studies in gerontology reveal that rest and reduced stress are vital for optimal health in later life. The book's approach is comprehensive, blending psychology, life sciences, and biology to illustrate how pacing affects well-being.

It unfolds in sections, first defining what "slowing down" means in the context of aging and exploring psychological barriers. It then delves into the biological underpinnings of aging, drawing on research about cellular aging and cognitive decline. Finally, it synthesizes these insights to offer practical strategies for adapting daily routines and cultivating mindful practices. By challenging the notion that constant productivity is the ultimate measure of value, Sixties Slow Down advocates for balance and self-care, making it valuable for those navigating later life.

In the spirit of Ben Macintyre’s greatest spy nonfiction, the truly unbelievable and untold story of Frederick Rutland—a debonair British WWI hero, flying ace, fixture of Los Angeles society, and friend of Golden Age Hollywood stars—who flipped to become a spy for Japan in the lead-up to the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Frederick Rutland was an accomplished aviator, British WWI war hero, and real-life James Bond. He was the first pilot to take off and land a plane on a ship, a decorated warrior for his feats of bravery and rescue, was trusted by the admirals of the Royal Navy, had a succession of aeronautical inventions, and designed the first modern aircraft carrier. He was perhaps the most famous early twentieth-century naval aviator.
Despite all of this, and due mostly to class politics, Rutland was not promoted in the new Royal Air Force in the wake of WWI. This ignominy led the disgruntled Rutland to become a spy for the Japanese navy. Plied with riches and given a salary ten times the highest-paid admiral, shuttled between Los Angeles and Tokyo where he lived in large mansions in both Beverly Hills and Yokohama, and insinuating himself into both LA high society and Japan’s high command, Rutland would go on to contribute to the Japanese navy with both strategic and technical intelligence. This included scouting trips to Pearl Harbor, investigations of military preparedness, and aircraft technology. All this while living a double life, frequenting private California clubs and hosting lavish affairs for Hollywood stars and military dignitaries in his mansion on the Los Angeles Bird Streets.
Supported by recently declassified FBI files and by incorporating unique and rare research through MI5 and Japanese Naval archives that few English speakers have access to, author Ronald Drabkin pieces together to completion, for the first time, this stranger-than-fiction story of one of the most fascinating and enigmatic characters of espionage history.

Finally, a philosophy book that doesn't take itself as seriously as the theorists it eviscerates! "Nothing Means Anything" mercilessly skewers postmodernism's most pretentious thinkers with savage wit and zero academic mercy.
Journey through the impenetrable jargon, circular logic, and breathtaking hypocrisy of French intellectuals who made careers out of stating the obvious in the most confusing way possible. From Derrida's word games to Foucault's paranoid power trips, from Baudrillard's reality-denial to Lyotard's grand narrative about the end of grand narratives, this book translates postmodern gobbledygook into hilarious plain English.
Whether you're a traumatized humanities student seeking revenge on the theorists who destroyed your GPA, a curious reader wondering what all the fuss is about, or just someone who enjoys watching pretentious nonsense get thoroughly roasted, this irreverent guide delivers. You'll learn how to sound profound while saying absolutely nothing, why your IKEA catalog is more meaningful than your actual life, and how to win any argument by claiming everything is a "discourse" (don't forget the air quotes).
Warning: Reading this book in public may cause uncontrollable snorting, concerned looks from strangers, and a weird sense of relief that someone finally said what we've all been thinking about these turtleneck-wearing, cigarette-smoking harbingers of intellectual doom. May cause spontaneous clarity and the disturbing realization that these insufferable French people might occasionally have been right about something.

The experiments of both Capitalism and Communism are almost complete, and they both lead to one big organization controlling everything you do. In 1925, when this book was first published, it was true, and it is even truer today. If you desire an alternative, consider this book, which considers Distributism, a philosophy whereby the actual people own the actual means of production, and produce and sustain themselves with it. A philosophy summed up in Chesterton's famous proposal of "Three acres and a cow" as being catalyst to an ideal peasant state. For such a simple idea, it has proven very contrary to the ideas of those in power, which is to say, to those who want power. But for the rest of us, for the sane humans who desire peace and liberty, this book is a call to action against monopoly and the inevitability of global standardization, which the magazines call the Supply Chain and the Bible might call Babel and Babylon. Narrated in an accent based upon Chesterton's own, this performance expresses Chesterton's words as he himself might have, delivering them to an audience of his time.
