Synopsis

"Desert Survival" reveals the remarkable ways life persists in Earth's most water-scarce environments, offering a comprehensive exploration of how organisms adapt to extreme desert conditions. The book masterfully weaves together three fundamental themes: the physiological adaptations of desert species, their behavioral modifications, and the intricate ecological relationships that maintain these challenging ecosystems.Drawing from extensive research across major deserts like the Sahara, Atacama, and Great Australian Desert, it challenges the notion of deserts as barren wastelands, instead presenting them as showcases of evolutionary innovation. The text progresses logically from basic survival mechanisms to complex ecosystem interactions, examining fascinating adaptations such as specialized water conservation methods and unique reproductive strategies.Through careful analysis of long-term field studies and laboratory research, readers discover how desert organisms handle extreme temperature fluctuations and water scarcity. The book's interdisciplinary approach combines insights from biology, climate science, and evolutionary studies, making complex concepts accessible through real-world examples and clear explanations. What sets this work apart is its global perspective on desert adaptation, synthesizing research from multiple continents to present a complete picture of desert life. The book's structure moves from individual survival mechanisms to broader ecosystem dynamics, incorporating recent findings in genetics and physiology. This comprehensive approach makes it valuable for both academic readers and passionate naturalists, offering practical insights for conservation efforts while highlighting the sophisticated biological innovations that have evolved in these extreme environments.

In the mid-eighteenth century, most of the Mediterranean coastline and its hinterlands were controlled by the Ottoman Empire, a vast Islamic power regarded by Christian Europe with awe and fear. By the end of the First World War, however, this great civilisation had been completely subjugated, and its territories occupied by European powers. Sea of Troubles is the definitive account of the European conquest of the Levant and North Africa over three centuries. Ian Rutledge reveals the intense imperial rivalry between six European powers - Britain, France, Italy, Spain, Austria-Hungary and Russia - who all jostled for control of the trade, lands and wealth of the Islamic Mediterranean. The competition between these states made their conquest a far more difficult and extended task than they encountered elsewhere in the world. Yet, as new contenders entered the contest, and as rivalries intensified in the early twentieth century, events would spiral out of control as the continent headed towards the First World War.

For too long, Native American people in the United States have been stereotyped as vestiges of the past, invisible citizens in their own land obliged to remind others, "We are still here!" Yet today, Native leaders are at the center of social change, challenging philanthropic organizations that have historically excluded Native people, and fighting for economic and environmental justice.

Invisible No More is a collection of stories by Native American leaders, many of them women, who are leading the way through cultural grounding and nation-building in the areas of community, environmental justice, and economic justice. Authors in the collection come from over a dozen Native nations. While telling their stories, authors excavate the history and ongoing effects of genocide and colonialism. At the same time, the authors detail ways that listeners might imagine the world differently, presenting stories of Native community building that offer benefits for all.

In a world facing a mounting climate crisis and record economic inequality, Invisible No More exposes the deep wounds of a racist past while offering a powerful call to care for one another and the planet. Indigenous communities have much to offer, not the least of which are solutions gleaned from cultural knowledge developed over generations.

Plasma, often referred to as the fourth state of matter, is a unique and dynamic state in which gas is ionized, allowing free electrons and ions to coexist. Unlike solids, liquids, and gases, plasma exhibits collective behavior due to long-range electromagnetic interactions among its charged particles. It is the most abundant form of matter in the universe, making up stars, the interstellar medium, and even artificial applications on Earth.
The concept of plasma dates back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries when scientists first began studying ionized gases. The term "plasma" was coined in 1928 by Irving Langmuir while researching electrical discharges in gases. Since then, plasma physics has evolved into a vast field, influencing multiple scientific and technological disciplines, including astrophysics, nuclear fusion, space exploration, and industrial applications.
One of the defining characteristics of plasma is its ability to conduct electricity and respond to magnetic fields. Unlike neutral gases, where collisions dominate particle interactions, plasmas are governed by electromagnetic forces, leading to complex behaviors such as waves, instabilities, and turbulence. This property allows plasmas to sustain structures like magnetospheres around planets and controlled fusion reactors designed for energy production.

Lyme disease is an infectious illness primarily caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, which is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected black-legged tick, commonly known as the deer tick. The disease is named after Lyme, Connecticut, where the first recognized outbreak occurred in the 1970s. Since then, Lyme disease has become the most common vector-borne disease in the United States and many parts of the world, with cases steadily increasing due to expanding tick populations and climate changes.
The bacteria responsible for Lyme disease are typically introduced into the human bloodstream when an infected tick attaches itself to the skin and begins feeding. The early signs of Lyme disease can range from mild to severe and are often mistaken for other common illnesses. The most notable symptom is a circular, red rash, often described as a "bull's-eye," which can appear at the site of the tick bite. This rash, called erythema migrans, occurs in approximately 70-80% of patients and is considered a hallmark of early Lyme disease. However, not everyone with Lyme disease develops this rash, and other flu-like symptoms such as fever, fatigue, muscle and joint aches, and headache may also appear.
If left untreated, Lyme disease can progress to more severe stages, where it may affect the joints, nervous system, and heart. In some cases, patients may experience chronic symptoms such as joint pain, neurological problems, and persistent fatigue, even after the initial infection has been treated. This stage is known as "post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome" (PTLDS), where symptoms can linger for months or even years.

Medicinal plants  in Ecuador add up to 3118 species, 75% being native, of these, 80 were investigated by the PUCE-KRIBB project, finally 30 species were collected in this publication for being the most promising. We hope that this book contributes to new research on active ingredients that at some point will be used for the preparation of phytopharmaceuticals, for the benefit of society in general.
