Synopsis

"Pattern Recognition Power" unveils the fundamental role pattern recognition plays in problem-solving, cognitive development, and even activities like solving puzzles. It highlights how this cognitive skill enables us to predict outcomes, decipher intricate systems, and learn effectively; for instance, recognizing patterns in traffic helps us anticipate potential hazards, while identifying grammatical structures aids in language acquisition. The book emphasizes that improving pattern recognition abilities can lead to significant improvements in various facets of life.

The book approaches this subject by first introducing core principles and cognitive processes, followed by exploring applications in problem-solving and examining its role in brain development. It then provides practical techniques to hone pattern recognition skills. Did you know pattern recognition is not just a passive cognitive function, but an active skill that can be developed? Or that experiences shape our ability to perceive patterns? By integrating both theoretical insights and practical applications, this book distinguishes itself by providing strategies to enhance your cognitive function.

The book is structured to provide a comprehensive understanding, starting with basics and moving to practical applications. Chapters progress from foundational concepts to complex problem-solving, brain development, and skill-enhancing exercises, ensuring a thorough exploration of pattern recognition.

"We weren't religious per se. The most frequent mention of God in our house was my mother yelling 'Goddammit!'"
Part memoir, part social history, in Departure Stories: Betty Crocker Made Matzoh Balls (and other lies), Elisa Bernick uses her family’s experiences to explore Minnesota’s legacy of antisemitism and the struggle for women’s rights during the 1960s and early 1970s. She tells both heartbreaking and hilarious stories about being the only Jews in the suburb of New Hope during this period and shows how being considered “different” took a toll on her family, particularly her mother. This book discusses abandonment, abuse, intergenerational trauma, and divorce, but it uses humor and sensitivity to present a hopeful message about examining the flexibility of memory and the possibility of rewriting the stories we tell about trauma and transforming them into tales of empowerment.
Deftly interweaving reporting, archival material, memoir, jokes, scrapbook fragments, personal commentary, and one very special Waikiki Meatballs recipe, Bernick explores how the invisible baggage of place and memory, Minnesota's uniquely antisemitic history, and the cultural shifts of feminism and changing marital expectations contributed to her family's eventual implosion.
Departure Stories: Betty Crocker Made Matzoh Balls (and Other Lies) is a personal exploration of erasure, immigrants, and exiles that examines the ways departures—from places, families and memory—have far-reaching effects.

A Vietnam veteran recounts his experience through two tours of duty—early in the conflict and then in its final stages. Fresh out of West Point, John Howard arrived for his first tour in Vietnam in 1965, the first full year of escalation when U.S. troop levels increased dramatically, from 23,000 to 184,000. When Howard returned for a second tour in 1972, troop strength stood at 24,000 and would dwindle to a mere fifty the following year. He thus participated in the very early and very late stages of American military involvement in the Vietnam War.   Howard’s two tours—the first as a platoon commander and member of an elite counterguerrilla force, and the second as a senior advisor to the South Vietnamese—provide a fascinating lens through which to view not only one soldier’s experience in Vietnam, but also the country’s.

Amazing! An astonishing find! - AMITAV GHOSH
Nariman Karkaria, a young Parsi from Gujarat, had always wanted to see the world. So he left home as a teenager with fifty rupees in his pocket to do just that. After working in Hong Kong and Peking for a few years, in 1914, when war was in the air, he decided to volunteer for the British Army. Passing through China, Manchuria, Siberia, Russia and Scandinavia, he reached London early in 1915 and managed to register as a private with the 24th Middlesex Regiment. He was now a Tommy.
Incredibly, Karkaria saw action on three major fronts in the next three years. In 1916, he was in the trenches at the Battle of the Somme. After convalescing from an injury, he was sent off to the Middle Eastern Front where he fought in the Battle of Jerusalem in 1917. He was then transferred to the Balkan Front in 1918, where he served in Salonika. After being discharged, he returned to India and wrote a book in Gujarati about his years of travel and adventure, which was published in 1922.
Karkaria's war memoir is truly one of a kind. And in Murali Ranganathan's brilliant translation, this astonishing story comes alive with rare immediacy and vigour.
