Synopsis

Meet history's original keyboard warrior—except with quills, imprisonment, and better one-liners.

This book delivers a hilarious and irreverent guide to  Voltaire, the 18th-century French philosopher who trolled kings, priests, and fellow intellectuals with such devastating wit that he had to flee across national borders multiple times to avoid imprisonment.

With her signature blend of historical accuracy and merciless mockery, Blackwell explores how this chronically exiled troublemaker:

Wrote 20,000+ letters and countless books while constantly claiming "I never wrote that" when authorities came knocking

Became obscenely wealthy through lottery schemes and investments while criticizing the excesses of the rich

Created the template for modern political satire while getting beaten up by noblemen's servants

Championed religious tolerance while writing things about various faiths that would get him immediately canceled today

Cultivated a philosophical garden that somehow became the most passive-aggressive gardening advice in history

Whether you're a philosophy student drowning in dry academic texts, a history buff who prefers their Enlightenment with a side of snark, or just someone who appreciates the art of the perfectly crafted insult, this book reveals how Voltaire's brand of eloquent provocation changed Europe forever—and created the template for everyone from Jon Stewart to your most annoying Twitter mutual.By the end, you'll understand why we still can't stop quoting this insufferable French genius nearly 250 years after his death, and you'll have mastered the fine art of insulting people so eloquently they're not sure if they've been complimented.

In this funny Regency romance series, the Shackleford sisters descend on a Regency society that doesn’t know what’s hit it…

While Charity Shackleford might be considered far more outspoken than her twin sister Chastity, she was much less inclined to make a complete cake of herself. Something her twin appeared to be doing with increasing regularity.

Indeed, when details of Chastity’s latest faux pas threatened to travel beyond the confines of Blackmore, it appeared that removing her from the vicinity was the only answer. Naturally, as always, Grace, the eldest daughter and current Duchess of Blackmore was tasked with picking up the pieces.

Unfortunately, just as she was about to inform their father of her intention to take Chastity for a short holiday to their sister Faith in Torquay, the Reverend was unexpectedly called upon to attend his curate’s sadly dying mother. Firmly of the opinion that their father could not be trusted to stay out of mischief long enough to give anybody the last rites, Grace instructed Charity to accompany him.

On reaching the trading port of Dartmouth, Charity quickly learned that nothing was as it seemed. Indeed, she discovered her sister’s worst fears were well founded as she, her father and Percy found themself embroiled in a long-standing conspiracy involving smuggling and murder.

Only the arrival of the mysterious Jago Carlyon stood between them and the infamous leader of the Hope Cove smuggling ring. Struggling to fight her undeniable attraction to the handsome Cornishman, Charity had to decide whether he could be trusted with her heart, or more importantly her life.

Perfect for fans of Regency Romances with wit and humor and a little bit of steam...

    BROOKS

I never asked for much out of life—just a quiet tower above my bookshop, a bow tie collection, and the peace of knowing every book spine is perfectly aligned. Romance is something that happens in novels, not in real life, certainly not to men like me.Then he walked in. Cody Cameron. Sunburnt, swaggering, Australian, and already knocking books off my shelves like some chaotic force of nature. He's loud where I'm quiet, messy where I'm meticulous, and yet . . . I can't stop looking at him. He makes me laugh, he makes me furious, and he makes me wonder if maybe I could step outside the safety of my tower.CODY

I've been wandering the world with nothing but my backpack and my compass, writing stories about places most people never see. I thought Mulligan's Mill would just be another stopover, another small-town article for one of my freelance travel stories. But then I met Brooks Beresford—the bow-tied bookshop owner who looks at me like I'm a tropical cyclone. He's stubborn, sharp, and somehow the sexiest thing I've ever seen. I've never stayed in one place for long, but something about Brooks makes me think about words I don't often use in my vocab . . . words like home.

The excoriating stories in Mark Doten's brilliant first collection dissect the pathological narratives that shape our culture and country. Narrated by a crosscutting array of White people, Doten's stories spotlight the self-serving logic through which their characters struggle to make sense of, and take control of, the narrative of our time. They run the political spectrum from "well-intentioned" liberals and newly woke CEOs to Trump appointees, QAnon adherents, and believers in replacement theory. There is an anti-vax nursing home employee, an anti-woke billionaire, a nonbinary sneaker podcaster turned January 6 insurrectionist, a nonprofit LA housing president dubbed "WORST KAREN EVER," an elderly Republican in denial of his COVID-19 diagnosis, teenage YouTubers responding to a shooting at their suburban Minnesota school, a demonically possessed cookie manufacturer drafting a BLM statement with his new Black employee, and a gay White supremacist figure who may be a joke on 4chan, but will have his revenge.

While their identities and allegiances differ, all of them are united by a ferocious belief in themselves, certain that everything they've done can be justified, if you'll just hear them out. In Whites, Doten has written a relentless book that confirms their standing as one of the great satirists of their generation.

No one ever said that Dave Simon, Dean of Admissions at Cherryville University, was ethical. No one ever said he wasn’t a hardcore pervert either. Well, into his office has just stepped the sweetest, most beautiful, and sexy exchange student he ever saw!

Now, what in the world is a man with Dave Simon’s sexual hunger supposed to do? After all, he can’t just let a cutie like that walk away after her interview is over. Between her sweet face, trusting eyes, and maddeningly perky body, Suki Fukushima is arousing him like no one ever has!

And on top of that, he can plainly see that, in addition to being sweet, beautiful, and shapely, she is also the most naïve young lady he’s ever met.

    Now his wheels are turning!

Dave immediately conjures up a banquet of baloney—telling her that it is customary for all incoming students to be inspected (by him, of course) in order to make sure she isn’t carrying any contraband or diseases onto campus.

Naturally, this will require that this nervous, unsuspecting little thing take off all her clothes and submit to a very thorough and intimate cavity search / medical examination.

And naturally, Dave and his audacious hands are having the time of their lives as Suki is ordered to assume no small number of humiliating positions throughout her bogus inspection.

And even after all that—even after she is left shaking, red-faced, and overwhelmed—Dave then informs her that, since she is a sexual novice, she is sure to be a distraction to all the red-blooded young males on campus, not to mention a danger to herself.

But, not to worry, Dave’s dirty and creative mind have the solution to that little problem all figured out. And all it will take is to find some randy college stud willing to help her out of her predicament!
