The Unforgettable Story of the Silver State

Nevada has a story unlike any other.

Long before the bright lights of Las Vegas lit up the desert, this land held stories carved into the earth. Native American tribes lived here for centuries, surviving and thriving, in some of the harshest terrain in the West.

Then came the settlers. Some were chasing land, others chasing luck. What they found was buried treasure: copper, gold, and especially silver. So much silver that it gave Nevada its nickname and a reputation that still lingers.

But silver was only the beginning.

This book follows Nevada's journey from wide-open frontier to one of the most talked-about places in America. From mining booms and Mormon wagon trains to nuclear tests and UFO sightings, Nevada's history is full of twists, secrets, and surprises.

     Inside, you'll discover:

    - The deep roots of Nevada's Native cultures and how they shaped the land.
    - How silver and gold rushes turned this quiet territory into a state.
    - The early rise of Las Vegas and why gambling became its signature.
    - The role of Mormon settlers in shaping early communities.
    - The long shadow of Area 51 and Nevada's military testing grounds.
    - What still sets Nevada's people apart: tough, independent, and never boring.
    - And much, much more!

    The Preventorium - A Memoir

Opened on February 17, 1929, the Mississippi State Preventorium operated continuously until 1976. The Mississippi Preventorium, like similar hospitals throughout the country, was an institution for sickly, anemic, and underweight children. It was established on the grounds of the Mississippi State Tuberculosis Sanitorium in the early years of the twentieth century when tuberculosis was a dreaded disease worldwide. The TB Sanitorium hospital housed those with tuberculosis, offering refuge for patients of all ages afflicted with the pernicious and contagious disease. Although located on the same medical campus, the preventorium was a separate medical institution for children; no children with TB were admitted in the sixty-year run of the hospital. The name preventorium meant a place of preventing disease as there was a fear of sickly children contracting TB. The Mississippi Preventorium was one of the last, if not the very last, of these special hospitals for children.

Now closed, the preventorium housed over three thousand children, including author Susan Annah Currie. In this intimate memoir, Currie details her fifteen-month stay at the preventorium. From her arrival in May 1959 at six years old, Currie vividly explores the unique and isolating world that she and children across the country experienced. Her exacting routine, dictated by the nurses and doctors who now acted as her parents, erased the distinction between patients and created both a sense of community among the children and a deep sense of loneliness. From walking silently single file through the cold, narrow halls of the hospital to nurses recording every detail of their bathroom habits to extremely limited visitation from family, Currie's time at the preventorium changed her and those around her, leaving an indelible mark even after their return home.

While many of the records from the preventorium have been lost, Currie's memoir opens to readers a lost history largely forgotten. Told in evocative prose, The Preventorium explores Currie's personal trials, both in the hospital and in the echoes of her experiences into adulthood.

    Celestial Promise

In this collection of poetry, written over half a lifetime, Hayley Ann Solomon focuses primarily on the pursuit of excellence, immortality achieved through finite life, love in all its forms, and social justice. As it waxes and wanes, the collection cycles through sequences of lyrical ballads, sonnets, elegies, haiku, snippets of nonsensical verse; all blended with a substantial dose of existential philosophy and social comment.
The collection covers a full spectrum, from the darkest psycho-social moments, to zeniths of absolute joy. The liberal use of consonance, assonance, alliteration, echoes and half-echoes, rhyme and cross-rhyme make for a style rich in sound-play. This, together with strong metrical awareness – very often iambic or trochaic pentameter and tetrameter – evokes a flow that is quite typically euphonic. There is therefore a sense of lyricism despite a broad diversity of topics and moods.
The anthology evolves to become a promise of regeneration, in synchrony with the phases of the moon, from which it takes its celestial title.
