  Peter Freuchen was born on February 2, 1886, in the small town of Nykøbing Falster, Denmark. Raised in a well-off family, his early life was marked by an environment that fostered curiosity and exploration. From a young age, Freuchen exhibited a strong interest in adventure and the natural world. He was inspired by his father, a civil engineer, and his mother, who instilled in him a love for literature and storytelling. These early experiences would play a crucial role in shaping his adventurous spirit and intellectual curiosity, which would define much of his later life. 
  Freuchen's education was broad and varied. Initially attending school in his hometown, he soon showed an aptitude for science and geography. Although Freuchen did not complete his medical degree, his time at the university was pivotal in forming his understanding of the natural world and fostering his interest in Arctic exploration. 
  During his student years, Freuchen was drawn to the literature of explorers such as Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen. These accounts of Arctic adventures ignited a deep passion in him to experience such feats firsthand. While still a young man, he decided to leave behind his academic pursuits and embark on an adventure that would change his life forever. At the age of 22, Freuchen sailed to Greenland, where he would spend the next several years of his life living among the Inuit people. It was here that Freuchen learned the skills necessary to survive in one of the harshest environments on Earth. His time in Greenland was not just a physical trial but also an intellectual journey, as he immersed himself in the culture, language, and survival techniques of the Inuit.

  Churchill will forever be most associated with World War II, but his life was far more adventurous and complex than that, and these other aspects of the man are often overlooked and overshadowed. He came from an aristocratic family, but his father, Lord Randolph Churchill, was not the firstborn son. That was important because the family estate was entailed, meaning the oldest son inherited the title of duke along with the land and the wealth. Thus, while Churchill grew up in Blenheim Palace, he did not inherit his family’s wealth, and that is one reason he became a correspondent and negotiated high rates of pay: he needed the income. The family’s aristocratic connections greatly facilitated his career, but it was his own courage, determination, and ability that led to his fame and historical importance, along with some phenomenal luck. 
  Before politics, Churchill was an officer in a cavalry regiment and a war correspondent, which took him to conflicts on four continents, and he escaped death more than once. His greatest escape was from a South African prison camp, which made him a national hero and greatly facilitated his election to Parliament.

  The name "Iroquois", like many Native American tribal names, is not a name the people knew themselves by, but a word applied to them by their enemies the Huron, who called them “Iroquo” (rattlesnake) as an insult. The French later added the suffix “ois.” Moreover, the Iroquois are not even a single tribe but a confederation of several different tribal nations that include the Seneca, Oneida, Onondaga, Mohawk, Cayuga and the Tuscarora, who didn’t become part of the union until the early 1700’s. The name Haudenosaunee (pronounced “ho-den-oh-SHO-nee”) is the name the people use for themselves, which translates as “the People of the Longhouse.” They are also commonly known as the Six Nations. 
  	Despite their own cultural differences, the nations that comprised the Iroquois Confederacy established their political dominance across much of America’s East Coast and Midwest through conquest, and it is that aspect which has perhaps best endured among Americans in terms of the Iroquois’ legacy. European settlers who came into contact with the Mohawks in the Northeast certainly learned to respect their combat skills, to the point that there were literally bounties on the Mohawks’ heads, with scalps fetching money for colonists who succeeded in slaying them and carrying away the “battle prize”. 
  	Handsome Lake (1735-1815) lived through the confederacy’s most turbulent time. His long life started when the Iroquois were powerful and widely feared and respected by all the tribal peoples in the region, and also by the French and the British. He lived through wars, some victories and some defeats, as well as the disunity and the collapse of traditional ways. Handsome Lake experienced his visions late in his life, at a time when the Six Nations, and his own life, were at their nadir.
