Synopsis

Calculus Made Easy is a book on infinitesimal calculus originally published in 1910 by Silvanus P. Thompson, considered a classic and elegant introduction to the subject.

Silvanus Phillips Thompson (19 June 1851 – 12 June 1916) was a professor of physics at the City and Guilds Technical College in Finsbury, England. He was elected to the Royal Society in 1891 and was known for his work as an electrical engineer and as an author. Thompson's most enduring publication is his 1910 text Calculus Made Easy, which teaches the fundamentals of infinitesimal calculus, and is still in print. Thompson also wrote a popular physics text, Elementary Lessons in Electricity and Magnetism, as well as biographies of Lord Kelvin and Michael Faraday.

This book consists of two titles, which are the following:
1 - Computer Science: Computer science is a field that deals with the study of computers and computational systems. It encompasses both the theoretical and practical aspects of computing, including algorithms, data structures, programming languages, software engineering, and more. It's about understanding how computers work, how they can solve problems, and how they interact with humans and other systems.
2 - Cyber Security: To effectively defend against the threats, cybersecurity professionals employ a variety of strategies and technologies. This includes implementing robust firewalls and intrusion detection systems to monitor and control network traffic, deploying antivirus software to detect and remove malicious software, using encryption to secure sensitive data both in transit and at rest, and implementing strong authentication mechanisms such as multi-factor authentication to prevent unauthorized access.

The New England landscape has long been battered by some of the most intense weather in the United States. The region breeds one of the highest concentrations of meteorologists in the country for a reason. One can experience just about anything except a dust storm. Snowstorms, floods, droughts, heat waves, arctic blasts, hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires, and other atmospheric oddities come and go with the changing seasons. Rare is the boring year of weather.

Knowing the past is a critical part of understanding and forecasting the weather. Meteorologist Eric Fisher takes an in depth look at some of the most intense weather events in New England's history. The stories in this book not only describe the loss and the damage caused by the storms, but also how nearly all of them in left such an impression that they immediately led to progress where new warnings systems were implemented, government agencies formed, and technology accelerated in response to the devastation these events left behind.

Cosmic rays are an intriguing aspect of astrophysics, originating from various sources in the universe, such as supernovae, pulsars, and even black holes. They consist of charged particles accelerated to incredible energies, often far beyond what our most powerful particle accelerators on Earth can achieve. These particles, when they collide with the Earth's atmosphere, create secondary particles in a cascade of interactions, leading to a fascinating array of phenomena.

Studying cosmic rays provides valuable insights into the universe's most extreme environments and processes. They offer clues about the composition of cosmic objects, the nature of dark matter, and the magnetic fields permeating space. Moreover, understanding cosmic rays is crucial for space exploration, as they pose radiation hazards to astronauts and spacecraft.

Researchers use ground-based detectors, high-altitude balloons, and even satellites to study cosmic rays from different vantage points. By analyzing the energy spectrum, arrival directions, and particle types, scientists aim to unlock the mysteries surrounding these enigmatic messengers from the cosmos.

Effective database management is a key part of any organization's success in today's data-driven world. In "Best Practices in Database Management – Structuring the Digital Realm: A Comprehensive Guide to Database Management," the author goes into great detail about the basics, methods, and new trends in database management that are needed in today's world.
This book starts with basic ideas like data modeling, normalization, and schema design and then goes on to teach you everything you need to know to be a database manager. More advanced topics are then talked about, like query optimization, performance tuning, and how to use cloud-based and NoSQL solutions. For each chapter, theoretical insights are combined with real-world examples to make sure that readers gain both knowledge and skills that can be used.
One of the most important ideas in this book is how to keep a healthy balance between technological progress and moral responsibility. This document talks about different methods that can be used to make sure that data is safe, that rules are followed, and that trust is built by using strong data management practices. Because it focuses on scalability and adaptability, the book gives readers the information and skills they need to deal with the problems that come up with big data, distributed systems, and real-time analytics.

The Shaking Woman or A History...

    Siri Hustvedt

While speaking at a memorial event in 2006, Siri Hustvedt suffered a violent seizure from the neck down. Despite her flapping arms and shaking legs, she continued to speak clearly and was able to finish her speech. It was as if she had suddenly become two people: a calm orator and a shuddering wreck. Then the seizures happened again and again. The Shaking Woman tracks Hustvedt's search for a diagnosis, one that takes her inside the thought processes of several scientific disciplines, each one of which offers a distinct perspective on her paroxysms but no ready solution. In the process, she finds herself entangled in fundamental questions: What is the relationship between brain and mind? How do we remember? What is the self?

During her investigations, Hustvedt joins a discussion group in which neurologists, psychiatrists, psychoanalysts, and brain scientists trade ideas to develop a new field: neuropsychoanalysis. She volunteers as a writing teacher for psychiatric in-patients at the Payne Whitney clinic in New York City and unearths precedents in medical history that illuminate the origins of and shifts in our theories about the mind-body problem. Hustvedt synthesizes her experience and research into a compelling mystery: Who is the shaking woman? In the end, the story she tells becomes, in the words of George Makari, "a brilliant illumination for us all."
