Beschreibung

Sentencing Reform Trends examines the significant shifts occurring in criminal sentencing practices, driven by concerns over mass incarceration and the need for a more just and effective criminal justice system. The book highlights the rise of alternative punishments, expansion of judicial discretion, and increasing emphasis on proportionality mandates, marking a departure from traditional, rigid sentencing guidelines. Did you know that the current system often fails to address the root causes of crime and disproportionately impacts marginalized communities, perpetuating cycles of recidivism?

This book uniquely integrates the analysis of alternative punishments like restorative justice and drug courts, the role of judicial discretion including plea bargaining dynamics, and proportionality mandates to provide a comprehensive view. It argues that a more nuanced approach is essential.

Beginning with a historical overview, the book progresses through an examination of core concepts, debates over judicial authority, and the practical implications of these trends on crime rates and public safety. The book uses legal analysis, statistical data, and case studies, including sentencing commission reports, to support its arguments.

Ultimately, Sentencing Reform Trends offers valuable insights for policymakers, legal professionals, and anyone interested in understanding the key trends shaping sentencing practices and their implications for the future of justice. The book addresses ongoing debates about the role of punishment in society, the balance between individual liberty and public safety, and the causes and consequences of mass incarceration.

A Measure Short of War - A Brief...

In 2016, the United States was stunned by evidence of Russian meddling in the US presidential elections. But it shouldn't have been. Subversion—domestic interference to undermine or manipulate a rival—is as old as statecraft itself. The basic idea would have been familiar to Sun Tzu, Thucydides, Elizabeth I, or Bismarck.

It came as a surprise in 2016 because the sole superpower had fallen asleep at the wheel. But what's really new? Have we entered a new age of vulnerability? To answer these questions, and to protect ourselves against future subversion, we need a clear-eyed understanding of what it is and how it works.

In A Measure Short of War, Jill Kastner and William C. Wohlforth provide just that, taking the listener on a compelling ride through the history of subversion, exploring two thousand years of mischief and manipulation to illustrate subversion's allure, its operational possibilities, and the means for fighting back against it. With vivid examples from the ancient world, the great-power rivalries of the nineteenth century, epic Cold War struggles, and more, A Measure Short of War shows how prior technological revolutions opened up new avenues for subversion, and how some democracies have been fatally weakened by foreign subverters while others have artfully defended themselves—and their democratic principles.

    Sigmund Freud Reflections On War...

“Illusions commend themselves to us because they save us pain and allow us to enjoy pleasure instead. We must therefore accept it without complaint when they sometimes collide with a bit of reality against which they are dashed to pieces.”
― Sigmund Freud, Reflections on War and Death

Here is a classic historical psychology study by Sigmund Freud. Thoughts for the Time of War and Death is a set of twin essays written by Sigmund Freud in 1915, six months after the outbreak of World War I. The essays express discontent and disillusionment with human nature and human society in the aftermath of the hostilities and generated much interest among lay readers of Freud. The first essay addressed the widespread disillusionment brought on by the collapse of the Pax Britannica of the preceding century-what Freud called "the common civilization of peacetime. The second essay addressed what Freud called the peacetime 'protection racket' whereby the inevitability of death was expunged from civilized mentality. Building on the second essay of Totem and Taboo, Freud argued that such an attitude left civilians in particular unprepared for the stark horror of industrial-scale death in the Great War. Freud's account of the centrality of loss in culture has been seen as seminal for his later work, Civilization and its Discontents. Caught in the whirlwind of these war times, without any real information or any perspective upon the great changes that have already occurred or are about to be enacted, lacking all premonition of the future, it is small wonder that we ourselves become confused as to the meaning of impressions which crowd in upon us or of the value of the judgments we are forming. It would seem as though no event had ever destroyed so much of the precious heritage of mankind, confused so many of the clearest intellects or so thoroughly debased what is highest.
