The Castaways of Disappointment Island is a true story, though lately out of print and in danger of being lost. This audiobook edition revives the survival story of Charles Eyre, who in 1907 was working as apprentice sailor—a dangerous if exciting vocation in those days.
Caught in a storm one night, The Dundonald sank after hitting the rocky coastline of a tiny subantarctic island known as Disappointment Island—arguably the dingiest bit of rock in the Auckland Islands archipelago, or Motu Maha (“Many Islands”) in Māori. This volcanic archipelago lies 500 km below Aotearoa New Zealand.
Twelve on-board The Dundonald drowned during sinking, 7 March 1907, including the captain and the captain’s son Jimmy, who accompanied his father on a sea voyage for the sake of his health. Jimmy was about to turn sixteen, three days later.
But Charles Eyre, alongside another fourteen sailors, were in their prime. These sailors were strong from manual labour. They made it to shore, though barely. The survivors had no choice but to wait for a passing government steamship to rescue them. And for seven long months they eked out a sorry existence, subsisting on mollymawk flesh, seal meat, seaweed and "root". They wintered over while wearing barely any clothes in a subantarctic climate where fog rarely lifts, sun rarely shines and where torrents of rain left them semi-permanently soaked to the skin.
After eventually returning to London, Charles Eyre told his tale to children’s author and Reverend Herbert Escott Inman, who crafted it into a children’s adventure novel, retaining much of the conversational style of Charles—a lively and upbeat character. This classic survival story remains a harrowing page-turner.
For modern readers, this story offers fascinating insight into a snapshot of maritime history—an era which ended soon after this story did, as the world headed into the first of two World Wars, and the Golden Age of Sail drew to a close.

Words are powerful at any age: from the moment we start to talk, we’re told to "use our words." But using your words isn't just about asking for something; it's about communicating one's needs—emotionally, spiritually, and practically—and connecting to the world around us.

Harold Green III's Words Are My Superpower offers practical advice for younger readers on how the words they choose have the power to change not just their own lives but others'. Some of the greatest "villains" in our lives include anxiety, fear, disappointment, and failure. But if we empower ourselves through language—employing affirmations, mantras, compliments, and more—we can overcome anything or anyone who stands in our way while lifting up those around us. Green expertly weaves a metaphor about categories of words acting as superheroes throughout this guide to help readers harness the superpowers offered by optimism, gratitude, and more. Infused with Green's gorgeous poetry, Words Are My Superpower teaches the importance of positive thinking and communication for young people to effect change.

In the season of 2024, I embarked on a journey to this otherworldly post-apocalyptic landscape, seeking refuge from the constraints of modern society and discovering profound lessons in resilience and human connection.
My experiences in Slab City were nothing short of transformative. What began as a quest for escape evolved into a profound exploration of self-discovery and communal living. Here, amidst the remnants of a forgotten military base, I encountered a community unlike any other—a gathering of souls navigating their own purgatories, seeking solace and renewal in the desert expanse.
As you delve into the pages of this book, you'll join me on a journey of personal evolution and collective wisdom. From the vibrant art installations of East Jesus to the camaraderie of the Oasis Club, each encounter in Slab City left an indelible mark on my spirit. The Slabbers I met—resilient, resourceful, and irreverently creative—taught me invaluable lessons about living authentically and embracing the unexpected.
Through the trials and tribulations of Slab City, I discovered that true transformation begins with the courage to embrace the unknown and the willingness to connect deeply with others. This book is a testament to the enduring spirit of humanity, a celebration of unconventional living, and a reminder that amidst desolation, hope and community flourish.
