Beschreibung

Five high school students, who have been life-long friends, have been given an English/History assignment for the end of the school year. It was decided to do their assignment on the Civil War era and how the people lived in the middle of a war. They knew they wouldn't have a live soldier, who had been in the Civil War as a reference, but that's when one of the boys in the group told them his cousin, who lives in the North Georgia mountains, had made a time-machine. The others, while skeptical, finally decided they could, at least, look at this machine. What they saw when going to see the home-made time-machine was beyond belief as they gazed at what the cousin had made. The cousin told them he made it for a joke, and the high school students had no plan to go inside the strange contraption until they heard a scary noise making them run inside to hide from the odd noise. That's when their adventure of a lifetime began as they learned a valuable lesson from long ago.

In his first memoir, Ander Monson guides listeners through a scene-by-scene exploration of the 1987 film Predator, which he has watched 146 times. Some fighters might not have time to bleed, but Monson has the patience to consider their adventure, one frame at a time. He turns his obsession into a lens through which he poignantly examines his own life, formed by mainstream, white, male American culture. Between scenes, Monson delves deeply into his adolescence in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and Riyadh, his role as a father and the loss of his own mother, and his friendships with men bound by the troubled camaraderie depicted in action and sci-fi blockbusters. Along with excursions into the conflicted pleasures of cosplay and first-person shooters, he imagines himself beside the poet and memoirist Paul Monette, who wrote the novelization of the movie while his partner was dying of AIDS.

A sincere and playful book that lovingly dissects the film, Predator also offers questions and critiques of masculinity, fandom, and their interrelation with acts of mass violence. In a stirring reversal, one chapter exposes Monson through the Predator's heat-seeking vision, asking him, "What do you know about the workings of the hidden world?" As Monson brings us into the brilliant depths of the film and its universe, the hunt begins.

Stumbling on Happiness explores a surprising truth: the human mind is great at imagining the future, but not very good at predicting how it will feel. Through engaging, accessible psychology, the book reveals why we routinely misjudge what will make us happy, overestimate how long joy or disappointment will last, and let attention and memory distort our forecasts. It also explains how people adapt more quickly than they expect—recovering from setbacks and normalizing successes—often thanks to an internal “emotional immune system.” With sharp insights and practical implications, this book helps readers make wiser decisions about work, love, money, and meaning by relying less on faulty intuition and more on how happiness actually behaves in real life.
