Grace is fascinated by the natural world. To increase this precious sense of wonder, she is chosen by Nature’s spirit guides and guardians to travel on ‘a funny, sometimes fearful journey’ with an amethyst stone as her guide and promise of help along the way. Creatures she expects to assist her are too self-important. Her allies are small, often overlooked plants, flowers and insects. Her main goal seems to be discovering what lies in and beyond the rainbow, but her adventures bring her only slowly nearer to its mysterious garden, bridge and palace. Everything appears to be a long way round.
She decides to assist a lost, bitter boy – Downcast Don – to rediscover ‘wonder’ by obtaining for him a specially made silver spade. This takes her through strange and fearful forests, down a well to find an underground forge, and into an overwhelming encounter with an ancient giantess in a bleak desert. Her chief guide, Heartsease, assures her that it’s all part of a search for rainbow wisdom, to recognize the importance of all things and people and to accept ‘not knowing’. She can then ascend the ‘Shining Stairway’ to a stranger country beyond.
Up here Grace is nearer the rainbow but time and distance play tricks and she is in danger of being side-tracked. A knight, Sir Cloudy, a kind dreamer who lives in a time warp, invites her to his ‘Castle in the Air’. She is deceived by a Menace and his monstrous Mother, and only just escapes their clutches. The promised places are beautiful and intriguing but she must learn about what lies under the surface. The palace that crowns the bow bridge is where the guides and guardians weave their many-colored tapestries that reveal perspectives and choices about the future. When Grace descends the vanishing rainbow steps she meets characters who have made her journey so instructive, and once back in the everyday world she is still herself but somehow more so because she can see and understand more acutely.

A suspenseful tale of witches, family, and magic from internationally bestselling author Stefan Bachmann. When a twelve-year-old orphan unexpectedly becomes the mistress of a seemingly abandoned castle, she is thrust into a mysterious plot involving murderous spells, false identity, and a magical battle of wills between the living and the dead. Readers of Kate Milford's Greenglass House, Victoria Schwab's City of Ghosts, and Diana Wynne Jones will be riveted.
Twelve-year-old Zita, an orphan and a housemaid, has resigned herself to a life of drudgery when a strange letter arrives, naming her the only living heir to the Brydgeborn fortune. Now the mistress of the castle, Zita soon realizes foul play led to the death of her family. And as she is guided through lessons in the art of witchcraft by the somewhat mysterious Mrs. Cantanker, Zita begins to wonder who is friend and who is foe.
Unforgettable and utterly enchanting, this stand-alone tale about family, belonging, and friendship will bewitch readers of Tahereh Mafi’s Whichwood, Katherine Arden’s Small Spaces, and Diana Wynne Jones’s Howl’s Moving Castle. Cinders & Sparrows is a magical page-turner by the author of The Peculiar, the acclaimed international bestseller.

Winnie and her mom have been “two girls against the world” for longer than Winnie can remember. But now Mom is moving Winnie away from her beloved Denver, away from her two best friends.

In Rock Springs, Wyoming, Winnie will have to make new friends (hard), go to a school where the kids tease her (unbearable), and get used to living with her stepfather-to-be and his annoying son (impossible). Winnie is determined to find a way back to Denver and her old life. But how? If only the magic in the stories that Winnie adores were true. …

Then one night, a mysterious bird leads Winnie to a strangely glowing oak tree, and there, in its branches is a nest of golden eggs that are not eggs at all but wishes, wishes that are soon coming true in unexpected ways. Here is real magic, if only Winnie can figure out how to make a wish that will fix her life without ruining everything.

“With immersive prose and a pinch of real magic, Amanda Rawson Hill spins a fairy tale about anxiety, anger, and acceptance that will linger with a reader ever after.”—Cindy Baldwin, author of Where the Watermelons Grow

It was totally dark. The lights in the city were turned off, and there were no street lamps, no neon signs, and no extra glow in shop windows. Klaus noticed that theirs was the only car on the road. How would they slip by the checkpoint? Klaus glanced at his wife Tina, whose eyes were shut in prayer. Suddenly he heard a thunderous crash, then saw a bright flash of light. Klaus-Dieter John (1960-) dreamed of becoming a medical missionary in the developing world. He would do whatever it took -- study in top universities and practice surgery in remote and dangerous places -- to reach his goal of providing health care for people who needed it most. Dr. John's seemingly impossible vision of Diospi-Suyana, a world-class hospital for impoverished Peruvians deep in the Andes Mountains, was blessed by God to the end. Despite challenges in fund-raising, construction, moving his family from Germany, and countless roadblocks, Klaus's dream was finally realized, bringing hope in a land loved by God.
