Sinopse

War Crimes Justice offers a critical examination of international efforts to prosecute war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity. It explores the evolution of international criminal law, tracing its roots from early conventions to the establishment of the International Criminal Court (ICC), while also assessing the practical mechanisms used by international courts and tribunals. Interestingly, the book emphasizes that the pursuit of accountability, though morally imperative, is often complicated by political considerations and the limitations of international institutions.

The book delves into key topics such as defining war crimes under international law and analyzing the successes and failures of the ICC. For example, the book highlights the inherent tensions between universal justice and state sovereignty. Through case studies and legal document analysis, War Crimes Justice offers a balanced perspective on the challenges and opportunities in holding perpetrators accountable.

The narrative progresses by first defining key concepts before exploring the functioning of various international courts and tribunals. It culminates in a critical assessment of the effectiveness of international criminal justice and considers the role of NGOs and civil society. This approach provides readers with a comprehensive understanding of war crimes justice within the context of world history and international law.

This program is read by the author.“Uplifting. . . . O’Rourke gets an A-plus on both the moral frisson of the long fight and the rightness of the cause. . . . The happy warrior from Texas is inspiring.” --The Washington PostActivist and political leader Beto O’Rourke blends history, sociology, and travelogue for a thrilling, inspiring case for how voting rights is essential to a productive and healthy democracy. In We’ve Got To Try, O’Rourke shines a spotlight on the heroic life and work of Dr. Lawrence Aaron Nixon and the west Texas town where he made his stand. The son of an enslaved man, Nixon grew up in the Confederate stronghold of Marshall, Texas before moving to El Paso, becoming a civil rights leader, and helping to win one of the most significant civil and voting rights victories in American history: the defeat of the all-white primary. His fight for the ballot spanned 20 years and twice took him to the U.S. Supreme Court. With heart, eloquence, and powerful storytelling, O’Rourke weaves together Nixon’s story with those of other great Texans who changed the course of voting rights and improved America’s democracy. While connecting voting rights and democracy to the major issues of our time, O’Rourke also shares what he saw, heard, and learned while on his own journey throughout the 254 counties of his home state. By telling the stories of those he met along the way and bringing us into the epicenter of the current fight against voter suppression, the former El Paso Congressman shows just how essential it is that the sacred right to vote is protected and that we each do our part to save our democracy for generations to come. The Birth of the Palestinian Nation

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice. In the pre-dawn hours of April 9, 1948, five weeks before the establishment of the State of Israel, members of the underground organizations Etzel and Lehi attacked the Arab village of Deir Yassin near Jerusalem. By the end of the battle, the myth of a massacre had taken root, becoming a catalyst for a previously undefined Palestinian national consciousness.

Historically, the Arabs of Palestine saw themselves as part of the broader Arab nation. Israeli military historian Dr. Uri Milstein identifies Deir Yassin as a turning point, when Palestinian Arabs began to develop a distinct national identity, driven in part by fear sparked by this narrative.

The Deir Yassin story also became a foundational myth for the Israeli left, as David Ben-Gurion’s leadership used accusations of a massacre in political struggles against right-wing figures like Menachem Begin and Yitzhak Shamir.

Drawing on archival materials and eyewitness accounts, Dr. Milstein examines what happened in Deir Yassin, alongside two documented massacres of the period: the killing of Jewish medical personnel in Jerusalem and the massacre of Arabs in Ein Zaytun in the Upper Galilee. He analyzes how the Deir Yassin narrative evolved and who benefited from its spread.

Dr. Milstein, an Israeli historian and former paratrooper, served as the official historian of the paratroops and taught military history at the IDF’s Command and Staff College.
