Beschreibung

Sculptures in Politics explores how statues and monuments serve as potent tools of political propaganda and vital components in shaping historical narratives. These sculpted figures, often viewed as static objects, actively mold public opinion and reinforce dominant ideologies. The book argues that these works communicate complex messages visually, transcending linguistic barriers to influence collective memory.

The book examines the creation of statues as instruments of state power, illustrating how regimes commission these pieces to legitimize their rule. It also investigates how monuments reinforce specific historical narratives, often marginalizing certain voices. The debates surrounding the removal of controversial monuments are discussed, revealing challenges in reconciling conflicting interpretations of history.

Using an interdisciplinary approach, the book combines art historical analysis with political and social theory to understand sculptures' political agency. Starting with core concepts of memory and power, it progresses chronologically through case studies, from ancient Roman portraiture to contemporary debates over Confederate monuments, equipping readers to critically analyze the monuments they encounter and understand their ongoing impact.

An expanded edition of the first practical, nonjudgmental handbook for dealing with microaggressions, featuring examples, sample scripts, action plans, a new discussion and activity guide, and up-to-date suggestions for creating a culture of belonging in the workplace.

Overt discrimination is relatively easy to spot. But the less obvious but more common actions that make people feel left out or stigmatized in our workplaces, commonly called microaggressions, can be hard to identify and even harder to deal with.

The author use a clearer, more accurate term: subtle acts of exclusion (SAE). After all, people generally aren't trying to be aggressive-usually they're trying to say something nice, learn more about a person, or be funny. Bring accused of aggression shuts the conversation down, when you want to open it up.

This book features examples, tools, sample scripts, and action plans to help readers prevent subtle acts of aggression from happening, or deal with them when they do. Updated throughout, this second edition features:

    -	A greatly expanded chapter on "intentional acts of inclusion"-actions for creating a sense of belonging.
    -	A discussion and activity guide ideal for book clubs and training sessions
    -	A new concluding chapter, Hope for Humanity

Whether in the form of stereotypes, assumptions, backhanded compliments, or objectification, SAEs are damaging to our coworkers, friends, and acquaintances. This book is your friendly, accessible, non-judgemental guide to creating a welcoming workplace.

Less than two weeks after the creation of Israel, the state’s leader, David Ben-Gurion, announced the creation of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). This represented the combined military forces that would protect the new state, and while it might have sounded impressive on paper, the reality was very different. The new army was comprised mainly of ex-members of several paramilitary organizations that had fought for the establishment of the new state, but they lacked heavy weapons, armor and air defenses. The Israeli navy and air force did not exist other than as largely notional organizations, and at the beginning of 1948, the Israeli Air Force did not possess a single combat aircraft of any type.
To many outsiders, the defeat of the nascent Jewish state seemed a certainty, yet in an unbelievably short space of time, and despite international embargoes on the export of arms to the region, Israel was able to procure sufficient arms to equip its armed forces and to successfully defend its territory in what became known as the War of Independence (also known as First Arab–Israeli War).
This was not the last war that Israel would fight, nor the largest, but its very survival as a state depended on avoiding complete military defeat in 1948. The efforts to do so were tied to a series of secret operations that provided the aircraft and weapons that enabled Israel to survive the First Arab–Israeli War. The smuggling would center on procuring advanced European weaponry, which ironically meant that some of the weapons that reached Israel hailed from none other than Nazi Germany.

Is CBT an effective form of therapy for children?Absolutely YES!
In recent years into the scientific community has grown a body of proofs that supports this statement.
Sometimes, as adults, we forget that children can experience some tough emotions or horrible situations. We write them off cause they are “young and resilient,” but that’s the wrong thing to do. Things that happen during childhood will have lasting effects, and it can cause them some serious problems later in life.
The goal of this book is to help children work through these things by using CBT. This is a workbook, so it mixes theorical concepts with practical exercises: parents and kids can step by step become familiar with CBT concepts and train their skill together, playing and learning new ways to approach modern life and its obstacles.
Here the main conditions that are treated in this book:ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) Mood DisordersEating DisordersOCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)PSTD (posttraumatic stress disorder) Self-Harm
The role of mindful practice is crucial into this self-improvement journey: It doesn’t matter how old your child is; kids can benefit from practicing mindfulness; it can help to reduce their anxiety and increase their happiness.
Over time, cognitive behavioral therapy can guide children through the process of generating more realistic versions of situations and provide the tools necessary to cope with them. Kids can begin to understand that negative emotions will pass, much like a dark cloud on a sunny day!

    "Young, gifted and black,

    Open your heart to what I mean . . . "
Nina Simone's popular anthem from the civil rights movement speaks to both the celebrations and trials of the Black experience.
Young, Gifted, and Black gives voice to the real-life stories of Black millennials and younger adults. If life was a race, it's assumed that every runner has a fair shot at winning. However, it's not always the case for young, gifted, and Black folks. Sheila Wise Rowe goes beyond the common narrative that focuses solely on their success or struggle. Her stories of celebration and lament point toward hope, joy, and healing.
Drawing from her years of experience in counseling trauma and abuse survivors, she provides stories, reflections, and tools for Black readers of all ages and their allies. These stories offer an opportunity to explore, reflect, and journey toward healing from the barriers that affect their lives, the lives of their children, and their communities.

    • Our education is concerned with the accumulation of knowledge.Very few of us are capable of living a life without the influence of specialists.
    • What is the point of going to a university, getting a degree and disappearing into the vast structure of society?
    • Q: How shall we approach the idea of study?
    • If you express from something already accumulated it is a deadly bore, but if
you are all the time watching, not only yourself but the world, you are learning.
    • Q: You say that a mantra is an escape. Do you think that people use drugs as an escape or because they want to become closer?
    • When I observe myself I cannot learn if I condemn what I find.
    • We observe through our imagination, through our image, through our knowledge.
