Synopsis

Diplomatic Letters explores the crucial role of written correspondence in shaping international relations and pivotal historical events. The book delves into how letters between rulers, ambassadors, and leaders served as instruments of diplomacy, impacting treaty negotiations, alliances, and conflict resolution. It highlights the art of negotiation through correspondence and emphasizes the significance of personal relationships, revealing that a carefully crafted letter could either strengthen or undermine international cooperation.

The book progresses by first introducing core concepts of diplomatic communication, then delving into specific historical events, key figures in diplomatic history, and ethical considerations present in diplomatic correspondence. It presents a wealth of primary source material to support its arguments. By examining the context, language, and subtext of these letters, readers gain a deeper understanding of the motivations, strategies, and relationships that drove international politics.

One of the few RAF aircrew to play a central part in two of the Second World War's most momentous events, the Battle of Britain and D-Day, Cyril 'Frank' Babbage was a survivor. He wasn't just an immensely skilled pilot; he was also blessed with extraordinary good fortune.

Babbage's image shot to national prominence in late-August 1940, briefly becoming the face of 'The Few'. Photographs appeared in the press of him stepping out of a rowing boat on Bognor beach. There he was met by a small crowd who'd seen him rescued by fishermen after bailing out. He'd been shot down by a German fighter, but only after disposing of another one first. Babbage's fascinating wartime experiences are complimented brilliantly by the stories of those who crossed his path, famous names like Amy Johnson and Douglas Bader as well as countless other unsung heroes. Many of the latter were youngsters he served with all too briefly.Between his contrasting operational tours Babbage spent time as a flying instructor, insulated to a degree against the ravages of war. Wing Commander C. F. Babbage DFM, AE retired in the summer of 1964. Like so many of his ilk, he owed his final years of peacetime service to the sacrifices of others—others like those brave men with whom he flew, but who enjoyed less than their own share of good luck.

Following the end of the Cold War, the world experienced a remarkable wave of democratization. Over the next two decades, numerous authoritarian regimes transitioned to democracies, and it seemed that authoritarianism as a political model was fading. But as recent events have shown, things have clearly changed.

In Dictating the Agenda, authors Alexander Cooley and Alexander Dukalskis reveal how today's authoritarian states are actively countering liberal ideas and advocacy surrounding human rights and democracy across various global governance domains. The transformed global context has unlocked for authoritarian states the possibility to contend with Western liberal soft power in new, traditionally "non-political" ways. Cooley and Dukalskis ultimately advance a theory of authoritarian snapback, the process in which non-democratic states limit the transnational resonance of liberal ideas at home and advance anti-liberal norms and ideas into the global public sphere.

Drawing from a range of evidence, this book doesn't just reveal the limits of the liberal influence taken for granted across the world. It offers a novel theory of how authoritarian governments figured out how to exploit and repurpose the same actors, tools, and norms that once exclusively promoted and sustained US-backed liberalism.

The Book of Lambspring is one of the few real-life cases of a centuries-old book on alchemy. Nicolas Barnaud was a French Protestant writer, physician and alchemist, from Crest, in Dauphiné, from which he took the name Delphinas. He was a member of the Monarchomaques. He is associated with a number of mysteries.
His 1597 collection Commentariolum in Aenigmaticum quoddam Epitaphium, on the Aelia Laelia Crispis puzzle inscription, included the alchemical Mass of Nicholas Melchior, still of disputed authorship. The 1599 Triga Chemica: De Lapide Philosophico Tractatus Tres was the first publication of the Book of Lambspring.

Of all firsthand accounts of lawlessness in the old Southwest, none is more fascinating than Pat F. Garrett's The Authentic Life of Billy, the Kid. It was first published in 1882, a year after Sheriff Garrett killed the Kid, "the bravest and most feared" gunman of the cattle war in Lincoln County, New Mexico. This book is at once the most authoritative biography of William H. Bonney and the foundation of the Billy the Kid legend.
Reputed to have killed his first man at the age of twelve, William Bonney went on to gun his way into Western legend as Billy the Kid. When he was killed at the age of twenty-one, the Kid was famous throughout the country as the boy who, so he boasted, had killed a man for every year of his life.
This is the story of William Bonney as told by the lawman who ended his notorious career. While explaining the public sympathy that people often accorded Bonney, Garrett challenges the glorified legends of the Kid with the genuine story of a reckless cowhand who became a hired gun. Combining the best elements of eyewitness history with the dramatic flair of a Western novel, this is the clearest account available of the career of a man some thought of as a murdering fiend and others as an American Robin Hood.

Art is the creative manifestation of essences. In order to understand the relation between art and reality, we need a philosophical guide. The best way to comprehend how the creative act of imagining enables the mind to seek reality is to employ the kind of dialectical thinking that Plato used in his dialogues. Beginning with the shadows on the wall of the cave in which each person dwells, that process gradually enables us to grasp the essences that are manifested in individual works of art.Without a philosophical guide, we are likely to encounter only a blur of images in the visual arts, a cacophony of sounds in music, a whirl of activity in the theater, and chaos in the building of cities. It is too much to expect a set of final answers to any serious question about what is true, good, or beautiful. If we abandon the quest for reality, we settle for too little. Plato's dialectical approach offers a path between Scylla and Charybdis.© Agora Publications
