Beschreibung

Australia Federation explores the compelling story of how six distinct colonies united to form the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. It delves into the political intricacies, passionate debates, and lasting consequences of this pivotal moment in Australian History, revealing insights into contemporary Australia's political structures and national identity. The book highlights the pre-federation colonial context, the federation movement, and the long-term impacts of nationhood, offering a comprehensive analysis of this transformative event. This book uniquely examines the federation process as a complex negotiation of identity, power, and economic interests, rather than merely a series of political events. For example, debates surrounding free trade versus protectionism and states' rights versus central government powers significantly shaped the final Constitution. Drawing from primary sources like parliamentary debates and personal letters, along with secondary scholarship, the book presents a balanced view. Structured in three parts, Australia Federation first introduces the disparate colonies, then analyzes the federation movement, and finally explores the long-term impacts of federation. This approach provides a clear and engaging account suitable for students, scholars, and general readers interested in Australian politics, world history, and the dynamics of nation-building.

In the 1982 State of the Union address on January 26, 1982, Reagan invokes his self-deprecating humor and calls for “a new spirit of partnership between this Congress and this administration”. Reagan cites the “stagflation” of the 1970s: double digit inflation, interest rates over 21%, and over 8 million unemployed.
Reagan notes economic improvement and calls for reduced federal spending, further tax reductions, and fewer regulations, saying our economic problems “are the inheritance of decades of tax and tax and spend and spend.”
Reagan calls for dismantling the Departments of Energy and Education but keeping a reliable safety net for those in need by rooting out waste and fraud in the food stamp, Medicare, and Medicaid programs. Reagan decries the growth in federal grant programs to state and local governments and calls for major reforms.
A short paragraph was lost at 23:15 of the Ronald Reagan presidential library recording. The missing words can be seen in the text version.
In meetings with foreign leaders, Reagan “spoke of the strength of the free marketplace system and how that system could help them realize their aspirations for economic development and political freedom.” Reagan endorses sanctions against the Soviet Union for its actions in Poland and Afghanistan, and urges “that we rebuild our defenses.”
Reagan concludes with a call to work together to preserve “the sacred flame of liberty -- this last, best hope of man on Earth.” This address followed the assassination attempt and the applause at the start and end was extensive.

This powerful, and sometimes disturbing and frank, political treatise was written in the early 16th century by Niccolo Machiavelli, a political theorist and Italian diplomat. Machiavelli was writing specifically to Lorenzo De'Medici as an instruction manual for "new princes." His perspective on the aims and glory of princes is a controversial but powerful insight into the cold calculations of men of his station in his time.
