Synopsis

The Book of Joel is generally considered one of the older surviving books of the Israelite Scriptures, with most scholars dating it to before the Torah was compiled, or at least heavily redacted in the time of King Josiah. Most scholars accept that Joel was written by a prophet called Joel sometime during the ancient kingdoms of Samaria and Judea, although estimates of when he lived vary greatly. The dominant view is that he lived in the 9th century BCE, however, some place his life as late as the 7th century. His world was very different from the later Kingdom of Judea that emerged in the 2nd century BCE, as the Israelites of his time were still polytheistic, worshiping the Canaanite gods, as well as statues of Yahweh, the God the Jews and Samaritans would later worship. While the Book of Joel is accepted by many as dating to the 9th through 7th centuries BCE, the oldest fragments of it to survive to the present are Hebrew fragments of the Sheneim Asar found among the Dead Sea Scrolls written in the Aramaic script, dating to the Hasmonean era. The text in these scrolls are generally the same as the Aleppo Codex’s Joel, which shows the surviving texts have been copied accurately since around 100 BCE. As it is unclear when exactly Joel lived, it is difficult to place his writing into a historical context, however, he does refer to his temple as being in the valley of acacias, also called the valley of Shittim, which identifies his Lord as Ba'al Hammon, the Canaanite fertility god. The Temple of Hammon, at the ruins of Tell el-Hammam in Jordan, reportedly sent tribute to Solomon when he was the king, and the town around the city existed from roughly 980 to 332 BCE. As Joel mentioned the Valley of Jehoshaphat, it is accepted he lived after the time of King Jehoshaphat, King of Judah between approximately 870 and 849 BCE. At the time, the region northeast of the Dead Sea, where the valley of acacias is located, was under the dominion of the Kingdom of Samaria. Joel also refers to Zion and Jerusalem, which implies a strong connection to the Kingdom of Judah. While the Septuagint’s Book of Joel makes a clear division between the “temple of your god”, and the “Lord’s temple”, the Masoretic version does not make this distinction, interchangeably referring to a “temple of God” and a “temple of Yahweh”. Only a few fragments have been found among the Dead Sea Scrolls, half of which confirm the Septuagint’s translation of “temple of your god”, and half of which confirm the Masoretic “temple of God”. These fragments date back to the Hasmonean and Herodian dynasties after the Judeans had adopted the Aramaic script. The Aramaic script was officially adopted for the Hebrew language under the Hasmonean dynasty, as Aramaic was already the common language and script of Judea, however, the country was inundated with refugees from the collapsed Carthaginian empire in the western Mediterranean, who spoke Punic and used the old Phoenician script.

Untangling the Sunday School Stories You Learned from the Biblical History You Haven't

    · Biblical archaeologist unearths the riches of the historical and cultural contexts of the Bible
    · Unveils God's Word as one glorious, world-changing story

When we first encounter the Bible, we are taught its stories--Adam and Eve, Moses and the Red Sea, David and Goliath, Jonah and the whale, and more. When a story lacks the details we crave, we fill in the blanks--with what we've seen in movies, read in books, and been told by our Sunday school teachers. But there's a better way to encounter the whole story of Scripture: uncovering and understanding the ancient world and the people who experienced biblical events.

In Stones Still Speak, Harvard-trained archaeologist and theologian Amanda Hope Haley scrapes back 2,000 years of misguided cultural interpretations to reveal God's Word in its historical, archaeological, and literary contexts. Far from a dry academic exercise, this process explains how our misunderstandings developed and revitalizes the Scripture you thought you knew, with the greater purpose of encouraging a more intentional, rigorous study of the Bible in your daily life.

The beloved spiritual teacher builds on the message of his enduring New York Times and international bestseller The Four Agreements with this profound guide that takes us deeper into the tradition of Toltec wisdom, helping us find and use the hidden power within us to achieve our fullest lives.
In The Four Agreements, Don Miguel Ruiz introduced seekers on the path to enlightenment to the tenets of Mesoamerican spiritual culture—the ancient Toltec. Now, he takes us deeper into Native American practice, and asks us to consider essential questions that drive our lives and govern our spiritual power. Three eternal questions can help us into our power and use it judiciously:Who am I?What is real? How do I express love?
At each stage in our lives, we must ask these simple yet deeply profound questions. Finding the answers will open the door to the next stage in our development, and eventually lead us to our complete, truest selves. But as Don Miguel Ruiz makes clear, we suffer if we do not ask these questions—or if we fail to pay attention to their answers—because we either never act on our power or use it destructively. Only when power is anchored in our identity and in reality will it be able to be in synch with the universe—and be of true benefit to ourselves and to others.
The three questions provide a practical framework that allows readers to engage with Ruiz’s transformative message and act as a vehicle for overcoming fear and anxiety and discovering peace of mind. An essential guide for all travelers pursuing self-knowledge, understanding, and acceptance, The Three Questions is the next step in our unique spiritual metamorphosis.

Is “the heart” still a relevant symbol of God’s love in today’s world? In this fourth encyclical of his pontificate, written during the 350th anniversary year of the first apparition of the Sacred Heart of Jesus to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, Pope Francis affirms the centrality of the Sacred Heart in the history, theology, devotion, and missionary activity of the Church. The pope reflects on the Christian meaning of “the heart” as the integrating center of the person. He then turns to Scripture, magisterial teaching, and the spirituality of the saints—including Francis de Sales, Claude de la Colombière, and Therese of Lisieux—to draw out the full significance of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Pope Francis concludes by proposing an integral, mission-oriented devotion to the Sacred Heart as a Christian response to a world searching for love. Dilexit Nos is a stirring call to personal conversion, reparation, forgiveness, and social action informed by the love of Jesus for humanity.
