Synopsis

Visit a Louisiana landmark that tells a big piece of the American story.Fort Jesup was founded two centuries ago, a bulwark on the youthful nation's western frontier. During its long run as a military post, it was visited by over one thousand soldiers and officers, many of whom would make a lasting impact on American history. The long list of luminaries includes Presidents Zachary Taylor and Ulysses S. Grant, over forty officers who would become Civil War generals, and two Surgeons General, one of whom would treat Abraham Lincoln after he was shot. Thousands of settlers also passed through on their way to Texas, using the fort as a waypoint on their journey. As citadel and stopping post, Fort Jesup played a critical role during the nation's formative years. Author Scott DeBose shares the sprawling story of this Louisiana icon.

Media Entertainment has taken over the western world and with every passing year it overtakes us with increasing voracity. As Christians, we have a duty to be salt and light in a waning world and that is where I AM Not Amused enters the picture. Two errors have arisen in the Christian world with regards to entertainment:Non-critical InvolvementTotal Separation
I AM Not Amused is about learning to balance being in the world, but not of the world. Throughout this book, we will learn how to weigh our involvement in pop culture against our call to be holy, using the popular arts as a springboard to reach lost people in the world. We also gain an understanding of what is at stake if we continue consuming Hollywood productions without thinking about the consequences. This book is a journey through the early days of media including the history of ratings, propaganda, and some of the legal matters impacting the entertainment industry as a whole. Finally we learn about the steps we should take to evaluate our own entertainment.
In brief summary, I first explain my purpose and motivation for writing this book as I journey through my adolescence in a media-saturated home. I talk about how music, movies, and video games shaped my life both for the better and the worse as I was raised in a home without boundaries.
The next two chapters examine whether or not media entertainment can actually impact us as we consume music, movies, and video games. Rather than take a usual Christian approach, we see what the artists and producers themselves say including quotes from Michael Greene, George Lucus, Marilyn Manson, and more. After examining how we can be impacted we see specifically what artists themselves say about the message behind the content they produce. This section does a deep dive into the messages behind Manson, George Harrison, and Insane Clown Posse among others.
After seeing what the entertainment industry produces, we tour through the Bible looking for what God’s Word has to say about media, our involvement, and our purpose. We start with a call to letting our minds dwell on holy things, then living out our life as a believer rather than a member of the world. Finally we address the two critical errors highlighting the benefits and pitfalls of each as we develop a plan to live better before God in our media-saturated times.
After a brief detour through the struggles of addiction including steps to overcome besetting sins, we provide steps for believers to incorporate into their lives to determine if certain forms of amusement are profitable for us to consume.
All together, this book is a guide to interacting with Media Entertainment for our amusement, and for our engagement with the world as we seek to fulfill the Great Commission.

In Kant Today: A Survey, Erich Przywara explores the enduring impact of the tensions inherent in Immanuel Kant’s thought on continental philosophy over nearly a century and a half. Drawing parallels to the efforts at synthesis of Thomas Aquinas, Przywara presents Kant as a thinker striving to reconcile disparate currents of contemporary thought. While Aquinas fused neo-Platonic Augustinian philosophy with the neo-Aristotelianism of the Parisian Arts Faculty, Kant sought to harmonize continental idealism with the skepticism and empiricism exemplified by a British thinker like David Hume.   Aquinas’s synthesis maintained coherence due to his reliance on the analogia entis. In contrast, Kant’s synthesis lacked such a unifying principle, leading to the proliferation of philosophical antitheses reverberating throughout nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century Europe. Kant Today chronicles the aftermath of Kant’s tumultuous synthesis and suggests that the resolution may lie in a thinker capable of uniting Augustine’s fervent pursuit of God with Aquinas’s distinctive epistemological equilibrium—namely, John Henry Newman.

Spiritual and practical lessons are extracted from every verse of the Book of Matthew, as well as detailed explanation of the text. The Book of Matthew is part of the New Testament in the Holy Bible and is one of the four gospels. The other 3 gospels are Mark, Luke, and John. Matthew was a tax collector before becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ. The style of his gospel suggests that he was directing his message to Jewish readers. His work aims to systematically prove that Jesus Christ is the messiah who has been prophesied about in the Old Testament. He did this by revealing each prophecy in that book fulfilled by Jesus Christ. 1996: The year that shaped a generation, revisited three decades on by Ex Sun Editor, Dominic Mohan
1996 a year that shaped a generation – all the glamour, glitz and grit of the 1990s relived, by the man who lived through it all, Ex Sun Editor, Dominic Mohan.
From the death of Kurt Cobain, to the birth of Britpop, Mohan forensically examines the era when you could truly come as you are. 1996 follows the year when all elements of British culture; music, politics, football, fashion, food, art and media collided spectacularly, allowing Britain to reclaim it's title as the artistic center of the world.
Mohan looks back (without anger), through the lens of his insider perspective, at the decade where records sold in their millions, rock icons made friends in politics and no one knew what an iPhone was.
Drawing on interviews from major 90s icons and legends, 1996 is an authoritative account of the pivotal period that saw the biggest artistic bomb in the nation since the swinging sixties. This book tells the story of one of the most influential eras, with keen observations, reflections and exclusive content throughout.

A warm-hearted guide to Buddhist practice for those ready to contend with the reality that enlightenment—the realization of non-self—can't be achieved by the self.

A well-known spiritual saying goes, "Enlightenment is an accident. But we can make ourselves more accident-prone." As an authentic American Zen takes shape, enlightenment continues to be misunderstood as a project to be completed, a goal to be achieved, or a prize to be awarded. Tim Burkett's new book unhooks enlightenment from the hot air balloon of ego and brings it back down to earth.

Drawing on stories of his first teacher, the Zen master Shunryu Suzuki (author of Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind), and Burkett's decades of practice and teaching, he reveals how to live in the world with a deep joy that comes from embracing the work and play of this very moment. With the wisdom and humor of a seasoned practitioner familiar with all manner of eccentric fixations and silly dead-ends, he offers views and practices we can use to support the paradoxical process of letting enlightenment happen on its own.
