Synopsis

"Each chapter in this book explains a complex problem through moving, amusing and marvellous stories. Sašo Dolenc's recurring theme is the elusive and often eccentric nature of inspiration; but in exploring it he covers an immense variety of subjects, from meteorology to microbiology, computer technology to market theory. His readers will gain a succinct and satisfying lesson on each topic, and a sense overall of the labour, genius and luck that science demands." -- John Stubbs, author of John Donne: The Reformed Soul and Reprobates: The Cavaliers of the English Civil War "Great fun. Like Malcolm Gladwell, Dolenc writes about complicated science in a clear, accessible way that entertains and educates. The smarter and better the writer, the clearer and simpler he will make concepts that are difficult to grasp. Reading this book is a pleasure you can learn from." -- Noah Charney, best-selling author of The Art Thief and Stealing the Mystic Lamb

We learn about life through the lives of others. Their experiences, their trials, their adventures become our schools, our chapels, our playgrounds. Christian Encounters, a series of biographies from Thomas Nelson Publishers, highlights important lives from all ages and areas of the Church through prose as accessible and concise as it is personal and engaging. Some are familiar faces. Others are unexpected guests. Whether the person is Galileo, William F. Buckley, John Bunyan, or Isaac Newton, we are now living in the world that they created and understand both it and ourselves better in the light of their lives. Their relationships, struggles, prayers, and desires uniquely illuminate our shared experience.
HERO OR HERETIC? GENIUS OR BLASPHEMER?
It's no mystery how profound a role Galileo played in the Scientific Revolution. Less explored is the Italian innovator's sincere, guiding faith in God. In this exhaustively researched biography that reads like a page-turning novel, Mitch Stokes draws on his expertise in philosophy, logic, math, and science to attune modern ears with Galileo's controversial genius.
Emerging from the same Florentine milieu that produced Dante, da Vinci, Machiavelli, Michelangelo, Amerigo Vespuci, Galileo questioned with a persistence that spurred his world toward an unabating era of discovery. Stokes confronts the myth that Galileo's stance on heliocentricity stood astride a church vs. science divide and explores his calculations for the dimensions of Dante's hell, his understanding of motion, and his invention of the pendulum clock.
To read this volume is to journey through Galileo's remarkable life: from his inquisitive childhood to his dying days, when, although blind and decrepit, he soldiered on, dictating mathematical thoughts and mentoring young proteges.

A behind-the-scenes political memoir written by a prominent White House physician.

I would talk to the president before the chief of staff even saw the president in the morning. I walked into work, and I was already in the Oval Office talking to President Trump.

It was rarely medical, to be honest with you; it was whatever was going on in the news. I’d be the first person he’d see in the morning. The president was completing tasks two to three hours before anybody else showed up in the West
Wing to work. He’d get up at five o’clock in the morning and would be watching TV, tweeting, making phone calls, and doing all types of other tasks.

President Trump would poke his head into my office or I’d walk out, and we would say, “Good morning. Did you see this or that?” He was always asking me about things on TV and what was going on, from Iran to Stormy Daniels.

He’d say, “Walk with me.” So I’d walk him to the Oval Office, and we’d talk about everything. I’d walk out through the outer Oval Office and the chief of staff, national security advisor, and even the CIA briefer would be standing there,
waiting to get in and talk to him. I’d walk out, they’d walk in, and his day would start. I was the first person he saw every morning and the last person he saw every evening when he went to bed.
