Synopsis

"Scenes in the Life of Harriet Tubman" is a biography of Harriet Tubman, written by Sarah Hopkins Bradford in 1869, four years after the end of the Civil War. The book describes life and adventures of Tubman, an escaped slave, who had helped many escaped slaves travel to the northern States and Canada before the Civil War, using the Underground Railroad. Bradford wrote this book, using extensive interviews with Tubman, to raise funds for Tubman's support. Harriet Tubman, born Araminta Ross, (c. 1822 – 1913) was an American abolitionist, humanitarian, and an armed scout and spy for the United States Army during the American Civil War. Born into slavery, Tubman escaped and subsequently made some thirteen missions to rescue approximately seventy enslaved people, family and friends, using the network of antislavery activists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad. Sarah Hopkins Bradford (1818 – 1912) was an American writer and historian, best known today for her two pioneering biographical books on Harriet Tubman. Bradford was one of the first Caucasian writers to deal with African-American topics, and her work attracted worldwide fame, selling very well. Adam Smith, often hailed as the father of modern economics, revolutionized the field with his pioneering ideas in the 18th century. His significance lies in his formulation of the foundational principles of classical economics, particularly through his seminal works, The Theory of Moral Sentiments and An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations.
In The Wealth of Nations, Smith introduced the concept of the "invisible hand," a metaphor for the self-regulating nature of free markets. He argued that individuals pursuing their self-interest unintentionally contribute to the economic well-being of society, as if guided by an invisible hand. This idea challenged the prevailing mercantilist views of the time, advocating instead for free trade and minimal government intervention in economic affairs.
Smith's exploration of the division of labor highlighted how productivity and efficiency could be vastly improved when tasks are specialized. This principle not only influenced economic theory but also had a profound impact on industrial practices and economic policy.

For eight brief years, before he was tragically killed in a mysterious air crash during the Second World War, Prince George, Duke of Kent, son of King George V and Queen Mary, and his beautiful wife, Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark, were the British monarchy's, indeed, high society's, most glamorous royal couple; and as golden royal icons they are still remembered.

As a young man, voraciously addicted to drugs and sex, with men as much as women, marriage and parenthood for the impetuously wayward playboy prince, with his night-clubbing lifestyle and intimate liaisons, was seen as the only stabilizing influence. Enter the stylish and sophisticated Princess Marina, the cultured, artistic, and multilingual youngest daughter of Prince Nicholas of Greece and his Russian-born wife, Grand Duchess Yelena Vladimirovna. As Duke and Duchess of Kent, George and Marina were the Crown's most glittering representatives, not least in the aftermath of the abdication of George's adored elder brother, the briefly-reigned King Edward VIII; the man with whom he had not only shared both home and high-flying lifestyles, but who had helped cure him of his addiction to morphine and cocaine.

In The Birdhouse Chronicles, internationally bestselling author Cathleen Miller offers a funny and wise account of how she and her husband abandon their San Francisco advertising careers to make a radical new life for themselves in a one-hundred-year-old Pennsylvania farmhouse located in the middle of an Amish cornpatch. Part memoir, part nature writing, and part old-house-restoration journal, this wonderfully humorous narrative brings home all the humor, exhilaration, and disappointment of pursuing a “simpler” life in the country. In her sassy, self-deprecating style, Cathleen Miller puts a fresh, authentic spin on the classic country memoir and surprises us with many unique twists. Sometimes wry, and sometimes full of awe, her observations about her neighbors and other locals infuse this true story with rich texture. Through it all we witness the blow-by-blow process as she and her husband refurbish their woefully dilapidated country house.
