Beschreibung

The Outer Banks is much more than an idyllic vacation destination. A day at a time through history, it has claimed its place as a colorful region of the Old North State. Author and historian Sarah Downing offers a daily look at the quirky and fascinating stories from the region's four-hundred-year history. During a fierce hand-to-hand battle off Ocracoke Island on November 22, 1718, Lieutenant Robert Maynard killed the infamous pirate Blackbeard with five pistol shots and twenty sword cuts and slashes. On February 14, 1992, a sick seal caught a ride to safety on a Coast Guard patrol boat. Add a salty slice of history a day or a month at time with this celebration of Outer Banks heritage.

"The Problems of Philosophy" is a book written by Bertrand Russell and first published in 1912. The book is a concise introduction to some of the central problems in philosophy, and it aims to explain them in an accessible way to a general audience.
Russell begins by outlining the distinction between appearance and reality, arguing that things are not always as they seem. He then moves on to discuss the nature of knowledge and truth, and explores the question of how we can be sure that our beliefs are justified.
Another important topic in the book is the nature of existence, and Russell asks whether the external world is real or simply a construct of our minds. He also discusses the relationship between mind and body, and the problem of free will.
Russell's writing is clear and straightforward, and he uses examples and analogies to help the reader understand complex philosophical concepts. While the book is not intended to be a comprehensive survey of all philosophical problems, it provides an excellent introduction to some of the most important issues in the field, and is a valuable resource for anyone interested in philosophy.

Sambhaji's death was a big blow to the Marathas. He was the rightful heir and a daredevil; someone who could have challenged Aurangzeb had he not been given up by his own family members.
The Marathas were not to give up so easily. The few years after Sambhaji's death were ruinous and confusing. Sambhaji's younger brother Rajaram, who was nineteen, and his mother Tarabai stayed at the Raigad fort. Yesaji Kank, a veteran since Shivaji's time, did not waste time to declare Rajaram as the king within a week of Sambaji's capture. This was a clear message to the Mughals that the Maratha monarchy was alive and kicking and that the Marathas were too.
Aurangzeb was not going to sit quietly. He sent Itikad Khan (later called Zulfikar Khan) to Raigad to capture Rajaram and his mother.

"This whip-smart collection is a playful celebration of feminine power.”
    —Publisher’s Weekly
"Goddam funny ... a clinic in irony. What a beautiful book.”
    —Ross Gay
"With the verve of Alice Fulton and the panache of Gerald Stern, Sysko keens into the canon, a welcome voice. Sing, indeed, heavenly muse.”
    —Alan Michael Parker
"With electric nerve, L.J. Sysko's savvy and often comic poems careen through American pop culture and the suburban world that infantalizes and traps women. Sysko fixes her gaze on adolescent girls and their trajectory into selfhood—a path that takes them through sexual shame and erasure, and then, as they age, into defiance."
    —Anne Marie Macari
2023 Miller Williams Poetry Prize First Finalist
    Selected by Patricia Smith
The Daughter of Man follows its unorthodox heroine as she transforms from maiden to warrior—then to queen, maven, and crone—against the backdrop of suburban America from the 1980s to today. In this bold reframing of the hero’s journey, L. J. Sysko serves up biting social commentary and humorous, unsparing self-critique while enlisting an eccentric cast that includes Betsy Ross as sex worker, Dolly Parton as raptor, and a bemused MILF who exchanges glances with a young man at a gas station. Sysko’s revisions of René Magritte’s modernist icon The Son of Man and the paintings of baroque artist Artemisia Gentileschi, whose extraordinary talent was nearly eclipsed after she took her rapist to trial, loom large in this multifaceted portrait of womanhood. With uncommon force, The Daughter of Man confronts misogyny and violence, even as it bursts with nostalgia, lust, and poignant humor.

The Iran-Iraq War, which raged from 1980 to 1988, was one of the longest and most devastating conflicts of the 20th century. To understand its eruption, one must look back at the complex web of historical grievances, ideological clashes, and strategic calculations that set the stage for war. The roots of the conflict lay not only in territorial disputes and regional rivalry but also in the dramatically shifting political landscapes within both nations.
Iran, under the rule of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi until 1979, had enjoyed a close relationship with the West, particularly the United States. The Shah’s regime was modernizing but also increasingly authoritarian, and his reliance on foreign powers alienated large segments of the Iranian population. This discontent culminated in the Islamic Revolution of 1979, which swept Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini to power and replaced the monarchy with a theocratic republic. The revolution shocked the region, especially its Sunni neighbors and secular governments, as Iran began exporting its revolutionary ideology and calling for the overthrow of what it labeled as corrupt, un-Islamic regimes.
Iraq, ruled by the secular Ba'ath Party under Saddam Hussein, was especially alarmed. Not only did Iraq share a long and often contentious border with Iran, but it also had a significant Shi’a majority population that Saddam feared could be influenced by Khomeini’s message. Additionally, Iraq had longstanding territorial disputes with Iran, particularly over the Shatt al-Arab waterway, a critical channel for oil exports. Saddam believed that post-revolution Iran, weakened by purges and internal strife, presented a unique opportunity for Iraq to assert dominance in the region.

Has the US strategy in Ukraine reached an impasse? What is the Russian conduct of military operations? When will the Ukrainian counter-offensive take place? Does Western weaponry really make a difference in Ukraine? Who are the winners of this war? What changes in the world are we witnessing since February 24, 2022? What is the reality of the losses on the Ukrainian and Russian sides? Can Western industry compete with Russian industry in Ukraine? Why is a negotiated solution not being sought? How is our perception of the conflit serving Ukraine?

To answer these questions and many others, Jacques Baud relies on information from Western intelligence services and American documents that were leaked in April 2023. After the best-sellers Putin, Game Master? and Operation Z, both works praised world-wide, Baud returns to the war in Ukraine by analyzing the facts and nothing but the facts. Whether one is for or against the position of Ukraine, one must nevertheless deal with the field of operations and to analyze what is happening there. This is the only way to find a path to peace—because peace will not come by relying on illusions.
