  This combo consists of 2 books: 
  1 - Mayflower: In 1620, a group of English families, known now as the Pilgrims, were carried from England to the New World on the Mayflower. When the Mayflower finally showed up in America on November twenty-first, 1620, it had 102 guests and a team of around 30 on board and was anchored off Cape Cod. 
  The Pilgrims, as opposed to their Puritan coworkers, chose to break away from the Church of England because of its Roman Catholic heritage and the church's hesitation to reform, requiring them to pray in personal instead of in the church. In 1608, a group of English families left England for the Netherlands, where they could practice their faith without fear of persecution. As early as 1620, the Plymouth Group population had determined to cross the Atlantic to the New World, which they viewed as a "new Promised Land." 
  2 - Titanic: At the time of her first journey from Southampton to N.Y. City, RMS Titanic hit an iceberg and died in the North Atlantic Ocean on April fifteenth, 1912. An overall of 2,224 guests and team were reported to have been on board when the ship sank, making it one of the absolute worst single ship catastrophes and the absolute worst peacetime superliner or cruise liner sinking to date. As a result of the general public's interest in the after-effects, the mishap has acted as a structure for the category of catastrophe movies. 
  The RMS Titanic was the second of 3 Olympic-class ocean liners run by the White Star Line when she began service in the year 1912. Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast produced her. That mishap said the life of the shipyard's Chief Naval Designer, Thomas Andrews.

  Squalus Disaster The: The...

  Given that there’s such little margin for error in a submersible, many submarine losses remain sources of intrigue and mystery, but in American history, few rival the tragedy and drama aboard the Squalus in 1939. On May 23 of that year, the Squalus, one of the U.S. Navy’s newest submarines, was undertaking the latest in a series of test dives off the coast of New Hampshire. She had been commissioned less than three months before and represented the cutting-edge of new submarine technology. Provided with eight torpedo tubes and a three-inch deck gun, Squalus had a range of over 11,000 miles and was capable of running at over 20 knots on the surface. This was a formidable warship, and the test dives undertaken in May were a routine part of preparing the submarine for service. 
  After successfully completing a series of dives over the previous days, on the 23rd, the Squalus undertook practice for one of the most challenging maneuvers, a rapid dive performed while the sub was running at full speed on the surface. This was a vital procedure if the submarine was attacked unexpectedly by an aircraft or surface ship - it had to be able to dive quickly in any circumstances. This practice ensured that the crew, and the submarine, were fully prepared.  
  Tragically, during this test dive, the unthinkable happened: the rear section of Squalus flooded, and the submarine, without power, began to sink to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. 26 men in the rear compartments died in the flooding, but 33 men in the forward compartments were still alive as Squalus came to rest on the ocean floor almost 250 feet below the surface.  
  The situation seemed hopeless to everyone but one naval officer, Lieutenant Commander Charles B. "Swede" Momsen.

  Following Caesar - From Rome to...

  In 66 BC, young, ambitious Julius Caesar, seeking recognition and authority, became the curator of the Via Appia. He borrowed significant sums to restore the ancient highway. It was a way to curry favor from Roman citizens in villages along the route, built from Rome to Brindisi between 312-191 BC. After achieving greatness in Rome and the far reaches of Gaul, he led armies along this road to battle enemies in Roman civil wars. And then, across the Adriatic Sea, he joined Via Appia's sister road, the Via Egnatia that began in today's Albania. Other armies followed these two roads that eventually connected Rome to Byzantium, today's Istanbul. In the early second century AD, the emperor Trajan charted a new coastal route between Benevento and Brindisi, later called the Via Traiana. 
   
   
   
  Today, short stretches of the original three roads can be seen in the ruins of ancient Roman cities, now preserved as archaeological wonders, and through the countryside near, and sometimes under, modern highways. Following those routes is the purpose of treading along the path that Caesar and so many others took over the early centuries. Modern eyes, seeing through the mists of more than two thousand years of history, lead the traveler along these three roads coursing through six countries between Rome and Istanbul.
