Picture this: France in the 1700s, with all its kings and queens, and the Age of Enlightenment brewing like a fresh pot of coffee.
It was a time of big ideas and even bigger hair, when people like Voltaire and Rousseau were changing the way folks thought about, well, everything. And then there's the French Revolution, that wild and crazy period when people decided they'd had enough of the aristocracy and started chopping heads left and right.

This book will also take you on a whirlwind tour of the Napoleon Era, where you'll get up close and personal with the little general who almost conquered the world – if only the Russians hadn't been so darn cold. The French Famine of 1693-1694, one of the most devastating in the nation's history, was deeply influenced by a confluence of environmental, social, and political factors that shaped its catastrophic outcome. To understand the severity of this famine, it is crucial to examine the conditions that preceded it, including the weather patterns, economic environment, and political climate of late 17th-century France.
At the heart of the famine was a series of harsh weather conditions that led to poor harvests in 1693. A combination of torrential rains, flooding, and unseasonably cold temperatures during the growing season caused widespread crop failure. The heavy rainfall ruined crops such as wheat, barley, and oats, essential staples for the population. In particular, the harsh winter of 1693–1694 exacerbated the problem by delaying planting and further destroying the few crops that had managed to survive. This extreme weather pattern, which was part of a broader climate event known as the "Little Ice Age," contributed to reduced food production and severe shortages across France.
In addition to the challenging weather, the economic and social conditions in France played a significant role in magnifying the effects of the famine. By the late 17th century, the French economy had been heavily strained by costly wars, including the Nine Years' War, and the lavish spending of Louis XIV. The country’s infrastructure was ill-equipped to handle such widespread agricultural distress. The peasants, who made up the majority of the population, were already burdened with heavy taxes and had limited resources to survive such a crisis. With most of the population living in rural areas, food shortages hit them hardest, leading to widespread hunger and suffering.

     Desire
The root of all suffering is attachment and desire
    Buddha
Buddha said that “the root of suffering is attachment and desire.” But what does attachment and desire exactly mean? It's basically what we do when we hold on to things in an effort to find happiness and comfort. We don't just cling to things that give us joy, but we also cling to something because we're afraid to let go of them as well.

The past four decades have seen a number of United States military interventions in the Middle East, but only one of them is retrospectively seen as a success: Operation Earnest Will, the escort of Kuwaiti tankers through the Persian Gulf in 1987 and 1988. As an officer who participated in this operation who then served in the region as a diplomat, Tom Duffy offers a unique perspective on Earnest Will. He argues that the fact that Earnest Will was a limited war and that it was fought with navies was key to its success. Forty years later, this operation remains relevant to security policy, especially with regard to a potential conflict with China. This new and comprehensive account discusses every aspect of the operation, including the role of other navies in the Gulf at the time. Relevant strategic and political elements are covered, such as parallel activities in the United Nations Security Council and the role of United Nations Security Council Resolutions in ending the war.  Considering the short-, medium-, and long-term impacts of Operation Earnest Will, Duffy explains how this maritime, limited war option illustrates key concepts from classical strategic thinkers, and why it is a demonstrably effective way to advance political goals and an example to keep in mind when facing future challenges in the Middle East and East Asia.
