  In 1973, economist E. F. Schumacher published Small Is Beautiful, which introduced a mainstream audience to his theory of “appropriate technology”: the belief that international development projects in the Global South were most sustainable when they were small-scale, decentralized, and balanced between the traditional and the modern. His theory gained widespread appeal, as cuts to the foreign aid budget, the national interests of nations seeking greater independence, postcolonial activism, and the rise of the United States’ tech sector drove stakeholders across public and private institutions toward cheaper tools. In the ensuing decades, US foreign assistance shifted away from massive modernization projects, such as water treatment facilities, toward point-of-use technologies like village water pumps and oral rehydration salts. This transition toward the small scale had massive implications for the practice of global health. 
    
  Developing to Scale tells the history of appropriate technology in international health and development, relating the people, organizations, and events that shaped this consequential idea. Heidi Morefield examines how certain technologies have been defined as more or less “appropriate” for the Global South based on assumptions about gender, race, culture, and environment. Her study shows appropriate technology to be malleable, as different constituencies interpreted its ideas according to their own needs.   The Maya were not isolated in their cultural development. They shared Mesoamerica with other influential civilizations, most notably the Olmecs, who thrived along the Gulf Coast of Mexico. The Olmecs, often considered the “mother culture” of Mesoamerica, left a lasting impact on the Maya through their artistic styles, religious beliefs, and ceremonial architecture. The colossal stone heads of the Olmecs, their early writing systems, and their concept of a sacred ballgame were all absorbed and adapted by the Maya. This exchange of ideas helped shape the foundations of Maya civilization, leading to the rise of the first great Maya cities.

  Cognitive biases are systematic errors in thinking that emerge from the brain's reliance on mental shortcuts, known as heuristics. These shortcuts evolved as survival mechanisms, enabling humans to process information quickly and make rapid decisions in complex environments. While they often lead to effective solutions, they can also result in flawed judgments and irrational behaviors. 
  The roots of cognitive biases lie in evolutionary psychology. Early humans faced threats that demanded swift reactions rather than precise analysis. For example, assuming rustling leaves meant a predator ensured survival, even if it was a false alarm. These heuristics prioritized speed over accuracy, a trade-off that remains hardwired in the human brain. Although modern challenges are less about survival, the same mental processes continue to influence decisions in ways that can lead to errors. 
  Heuristics function by simplifying complex information, but they often sacrifice accuracy. A common example is the availability heuristic, where people judge the likelihood of an event based on how easily they can recall similar instances. This explains why individuals overestimate rare but memorable events, like plane crashes, while underestimating more probable risks, such as car accidents. Similarly, anchoring bias causes people to rely heavily on the first piece of information they encounter, which can skew judgments even when that information is irrelevant.
