Synopsis

In the engaging and meticulously detailed "Diary of Samuel Pepys — Complete 1664 N.S," the famed diarist presents a vivid glimpse into 17th-century England, capturing the political, cultural, and personal upheavals of his time. Pepys's literary style is characterized by a candid and often conversational tone, employing an accessible yet richly descriptive prose that immerses readers in daily life. The entries from 1664 particularly elucidate the nuances of post-Restoration England, documenting significant events such as the Great Plague and the intricacies of court life, thereby situating the work in a broader historical context that highlights the societal shifts occurring during this tumultuous period. Samuel Pepys (1633-1703) was a naval administrator and Member of Parliament, who adeptly navigated the complex socio-political landscape of his era. His background in the civil service and his keen observation skills enriched his writings, as he meticulously chronicled everything from the mundane to the monumental. Pepys's insatiable curiosity about the world around him is apparent in his reflections on personal experiences, relationships, and the cultural phenomena of the day, making his diary an invaluable primary source for historians and literature enthusiasts alike. "Diary of Samuel Pepys — Complete 1664 N.S" is highly recommended for readers who seek a deep understanding of historical narrative intertwined with personal reflection. Pepys's unique perspective offers unparalleled insights into the thoughts and feelings of a man who lived through remarkable events, making this work not only significant for its historical content but also for its enduring literary value.

A nuanced take on how carceral expansions are changing labor and social life. In Carceral Citizens, anthropologist Caroline M. Parker offers an ethnographic portrait of therapeutic communities in Puerto Rico, the oldest colony in the Americas. As nonprofits nested within the carceral state, therapeutic communities serve as reeducation and recovery centers for the mostly male drug offenders who serve out their sentences engaged in manual labor and prayer. The most surprising aspect of these centers, however, is that their “graduates” often remain long after the completion of their term, working as self-appointed peer counselors in a mixture of volunteer and low-wage positions. Parker seeks to explain this dynamic by showing how, in these therapeutic communities, criminalized men find new and meaningful ways of living in the shadow of the prison. Through their participation in the day-to-day functioning of the centers, they discover and cultivate alternative forms of belonging, livelihood, and citizenship, despite living within the restrictions of the carceral state. Situating her study against the backdrop of Puerto Rico’s colonial history, and with findings that extend across Latin America, Parker challenges common assumptions about confinement, labor, and rehabilitation. By delving into lives shaped by the convergence of imperialism, the carceral state, and self-help, she offers a fresh understanding of the transformations of labor and social life brought about by mass incarceration.

There was not any one entity more central to the Yahwistic Judean religion during the monarchy than the temple of Solomon. It symbolized the presence of YHWH in the nation, as well as his enduring protection of the nation and the Davidic royal throne. Judean worshippers directed their prayers toward the Solomonic temple, and eventually, the Judean prophets and theologians declared that this was the only legitimate location where priests could perform sacrifices and other religious rites for YHWH. Its significance can be seen most clearly in the dramatic cognitive dissonance experienced by the Judeans in Babylonian captivity after the destruction of the temple, which had been so central to their religious conception that they had great difficulty reconciling its destruction with their continued belief in YHWH at all.
Jerusalem was uninhabited for much of the 6th century B.C., and this period is known as the exile to Babylon, and Bible scholars believe that it was during those years that the Jewish people came into contact with several stories and legends that would later be incorporated into their sacred writings. A generation later, Achaemenid Persian Emperor Cyrus the Great allowed the Jews who so wished to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple and reestablish their nation.
The Temple Mount remains the holiest place in Judaism and among the holiest in Islam, and due in part to that religious sensitivity and the current placement of the Al-Aqsa Mosque there, archaeological work is almost nonexistent. As a result, some have continued to question whether Solomon’s Temple ever actually existed, pointing not only to lack of physical evidence but also the fact that contemporary Jewish literature aside from the Bible makes no mention of it. The political tensions between the modern state of Israel and the Palestinians have also made the temple and all of Jerusalem contentious issues.

A Choice Outstanding Academic Title of the Year

In Deliberative Policymaking, Elizabeth Grant advances a fresh framework for making collective decisions about US schools. Grant argues that education policy can be made better by improving education policymaking methods. Informed by accounts of policymaking actions as well as her own experience, she offers a keen assessment of which components of existing education policy and policymaking have been effective and which have not.

Grant presents new approaches to the craft of policymaking. She endorses policy design thinking, including user-centered design; greater attention to education statecraft, such as reinforcing federal-state relations; and partnering with intermediaries who can help policymakers determine where the public interest lies. She underscores how these practices support democratized policymaking and implementation, which can lead to more inclusive, equitable policy.

Grant notes that the success of policy work depends on civic capacity to initiate and sustain improvement efforts, and on policy's ability to meet the demands of the time. This book is essential for anyone who makes policy or is interested in education reform.
