Synopsis

Food Microbiology explores the crucial role of microorganisms in our food supply, from ensuring food safety to driving fermentation processes. The book examines how bacteria, yeasts, and molds impact food, delving into microbial growth, metabolism, and genetics. It highlights the importance of understanding these microorganisms to prevent foodborne illnesses, which affect millions annually, and to optimize food production.

A key insight is how controlling factors like temperature and pH can influence microbial activity, affecting both spoilage and the development of desirable flavors in fermented foods. This comprehensive text progresses from foundational principles to specific groups of microorganisms, analyzing food spoilage and foodborne pathogens using real-world case studies.

It emphasizes the need for a holistic approach to food microbiology, considering the interactions between microorganisms, food, and the environment. The book uniquely integrates traditional microbiological principles with modern food safety approaches, providing valuable insights for students, food industry professionals, and anyone interested in the science behind food.

In recent years, emotions have become a major, vibrant topic of research not merely in the biological and psychological sciences but throughout a wide swath of the humanities and social sciences as well. Yet, surprisingly, there is still no consensus on their basic nature or workings.   Ruth Leys’s brilliant, much anticipated history, therefore, is a story of controversy and disagreement. The Ascent of Affect focuses on the post–World War II period, when interest in emotions as an object of study began to revive. Leys analyzes the ongoing debate over how to understand emotions, paying particular attention to the continual conflict between camps that argue for the intentionality or meaning of emotions but have trouble explaining their presence in non-human animals and those that argue for the universality of emotions but struggle when the question turns to meaning. Addressing the work of key figures from across the spectrum, considering the potentially misleading appeal of neuroscience for those working in the humanities, and bringing her story fully up to date by taking in the latest debates, Leys presents here the most thorough analysis available of how we have tried to think about how we feel.

How We Think - Digital Media and...

    N. Katherine Hayles

“How do we think?” N. Katherine Hayles poses this question at the beginning of this bracing exploration of the idea that we think through, with, and alongside media. As the age of print passes and new technologies appear every day, this proposition has become far more complicated, particularly for the traditionally print-based disciplines in the humanities and qualitative social sciences. With a rift growing between digital scholarship and its print-based counterpart, Hayles argues for contemporary technogenesis—the belief that humans and technics are coevolving—and advocates for what she calls comparative media studies, a new approach to locating digital work within print traditions and vice versa.Hayles examines the evolution of the field from the traditional humanities and how the digital humanities are changing academic scholarship, research, teaching, and publication. She goes on to depict the neurological consequences of working in digital media, where skimming and scanning, or “hyper reading,” and analysis through machine algorithms are forms of reading as valid as close reading once was. Hayles contends that we must recognize all three types of reading and understand the limitations and possibilities of each. In addition to illustrating what a comparative media perspective entails, Hayles explores the technogenesis spiral in its full complexity. She considers the effects of early databases such as telegraph code books and confronts our changing perceptions of time and space in the digital age, illustrating this through three innovative digital productions—Steve Tomasula’s electronic novel, TOC; Steven Hall’s The Raw Shark Texts; and Mark Z. Danielewski’s Only Revolutions. Deepening our understanding of the extraordinary transformative powers digital technologies have placed in the hands of humanists, How We Think presents a cogent rationale for tackling the challenges facing the humanities today.

I hope that you will find the information helpful, useful and profitable.
The ideas in this ebook on various aspects of the Internet including using it to your advantage is organised into 17 chapters of about 500-600 words each.
I hope that it will interest those who are hoping to make money on line, and those who want to attract more traffic to an offline business by using the often ‘free’ resources that the Internet has to offer. It will also be useful to bloggers who just want to make friends all over the world and chat with them. Luckily, many aspects of the Internet are still free, especially if you don’t allow yourself to be manipulated by the self-proclaimed Internet gurus, who are waiting to pounce on unsuspecting newbies.
As an added bonus, I am granting you permission to use the content on your own website or in your own blogs and newsletter, although it is better if you rewrite them in your own words first.

Thanks to smartphones, war is everywhere, all the time. Anyone can view, analyze, and comment on photos, videos, or other warzone media. Where did this technology come from? And what does it mean for the future of war? This book explains why you see what you do on your phone, and how these devices shape our knowledge, conduct, and representation of war in the 2020s. It shows why smartphones are indispensable in peace and wartime: every device is a potential weapon, lines blur between war and daily life, and conflict becomes a shared digital experience. Social media platforms displace state-controlled narratives, amplifying violence and shaping war's legitimacy. Apps democratize conflict, enabling anyone to identify and attack perceived enemies. As the Ukraine war has shown, this new reality involves complex, unevenly distributed infrastructures, merging civilian communication with military targeting. With war accelerating beyond our comprehension, militaries have raced to benefit from and adapt to the smartphone age. Matthew Ford explores critical questions about today's hyper-connected battlefield.
