Synopsis

In "The Vanity of Human Wishes," Samuel Johnson presents a profound exploration of ambition, desire, and the inherent futility of human aspirations. With masterful use of an intricate verse structure and a wealth of classical allusion, Johnson critiques the chaotic pursuit of worldly success and the ephemeral satisfaction it brings. The poem draws heavily on the moral, philosophical, and aesthetic influences of the Augustan age, offering a reflective commentary that resonates with the disillusionment of the human condition. The two Rambler papers, also included, delve into themes of virtue, vice, and the social frictions of his time, showcasing Johnson's adeptness in essayistic prose that seeks to enlighten and entertain simultaneously. Samuel Johnson, an eminent figure in 18th-century English literature, was shaped by his tumultuous early life, including poverty and illness. His pursuit of knowledge led him to become a lexicographer and essayist of unparalleled significance, allowing him to imbue his works with both personal insight and rigorous moral philosophy. His experiences navigating the complexities of society uniquely inform the critical perspective present in both the poem and his essays. This book is essential for readers seeking to engage with the moral weight of Enlightenment thought and its dissection of personal ambition. Johnson's acute observations not only illuminate the foibles of human nature but also provoke deep reflection on the true essence of fulfillment. Encountering Johnson's work is thus an invitation to contemplate the deeper questions of existence in an era still relatable today.

In 2019, intense fires in the San Francisco Bay Area closed universities and drove afflicted people to shelter at other campuses. At the same time, extraordinary fires ravaged eastern Australia. Several universities responded by promising material and research support to damaged businesses while also hosting refugees and emergency response teams in student residence halls. This was an echo of the devastation wreaked by Hurricane Katrina on Tulane University in 2005.In Universities on Fire, futurist Bryan Alexander explores higher education during an age of unfolding climate crisis. Powered by real-world examples and the latest research, Alexander assesses practical responses and strategies by surveying contemporary programs and academic climate research from around the world. He establishes a model of how academic institutions may respond and offers practical pathways forward for higher education. How will the two main purposes of education—teaching and research—change as the world heats up? Alexander positions colleges and universities in the broader social world, from town-gown relationships to connections between how campuses and civilization as a whole respond to this epochal threat.Current studies of climate change trace the likely implications across a range of domains, from agriculture to policy, urban design, technology, culture, and human psychology. However, few books have predicted or studied the effects of the climate crisis on colleges and universities. By connecting climate research to a deep, futures-informed analysis of academia, Universities on Fire explores how climate change will fundamentally reshape higher education.

This project brings together stories from young people in the United Kingdom living with vision impairments, highlighting their experiences and challenges in transitioning through key life stages. Supported by the University of Bath and funded by Guide Dogs, the project was initiated by Dr. Karin Petrini and Dr. Michael Proulx, alongside Dr. Aikaterini Tavoulari, who brought both clinical and academic expertise.
The team collaborated with a diverse group of young people from across the UK, some with additional disabilities, who acted as co-researchers and played a key role in shaping the project's direction. After ten months of collaboration, they decided to create an audiobook, also available in print, to share their stories with a wide audience, including individuals with vision impairments, healthcare professionals, universities, and other stakeholders.
The audiobook features powerful, personal accounts of navigating life transitions, such as moving from childhood to adulthood, relocating to a new country, and transitioning to independent living. The stories highlight both the barriers these individuals faced and the support systems and tools that helped them overcome challenges.
Ultimately, the project aims to inspire, educate, and connect people, offering insights that could help others facing similar life transitions, while fostering greater understanding for those who engage with individuals with vision impairments.
