  One Hundred Verses from Old Japan

  In 12th-13th century Japan there lived a man named Fujiwara no Teika (sometimes called Sadaie), a well-regarded poet in a society that prized poetry. At one point in his life he compiled the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu (often known simply as the Hyakunin Isshu), which means “A Hundred Poems by A Hundred Poets” (literally “A hundred people, one poem [each]”).    This collection of a hundred poems is known to almost all Japanese, and over the years it has been translated by many different people. One of the early translators of the collection was William Porter. His translation, first published in 1909, was titled “A Hundred Verses from Old Japan”.    (Summary by Kevin Steinbach)

  Written in alternating prose and poetry, La Vita Nuova (The New Life) is a profound reflection on the nature of love, devoted to Dante’s muse Beatrice. Following Beatrice’s death in 1290, Dante became obsessed with the young Florentine woman, whom he only ever knew from a distance. He believed his love for her was a form of divine love, and saw her as an image of salvation itself—a theme that is later explored in his masterpiece The Divine Comedy, where she guides him through heaven.   Butchers On The Moon

  Butchers On The Moon was originally published as a 40 page manifesto of sorts from an impossibly young poet, songwriter and filmmaker from Minnesota named Jack Norton. Sold mostly at his concerts, only one copy of the original chapbook is known to exist today and can be found in the archives at the University of Mississippi in Oxford. 
  Jack burned all writings (poems, songs, short stories and a novel) he worked on before 2008, so these lost gems are a true treasure. 
  This expanded edition includes several additional poems written in the same period but not included in the original publication. An unpublished chapbook manuscript - The Well Ran Dry - was recently found in the archives of the editor of Fugawee Bird Press, publisher of the original Butchers On The Moon chapbook. These are also included within this edition.
