Beschreibung

The reader is made to feel deeply and thrillingly the terror and anguish of the hunted, the deceit and cruelty of the savage, the patience and devotion of the mother to her young, the fury of rivals in love, the grace and loneliness of the great princes of the forest. In word pictures that are sometimes breath-taking the author draws the forest in all its moods—lashed into madness by storms, or white and silent under snow, or whispering and singing to itself at daybreak .Louise Long, The Dallas Morning News, October 30, 1938[39]

Bambi is a delicious book. for delicacy of perception and essential truth i hardly know any story of animals that can stand beside this life study of a forest deer. felix salten is a poet. he feels nature deeply, and he loves animals. i do not, as a rule, like the method which places human words in the mouths of dumb creatures, and it is the triumph of this book that, behind the conversation, one feels the real sensations of the creatures who speak. clear and illuminating, and in places very moving, it is a little masterpiece.

I read it in galley proof on the way from paris to calais, before a channel crossing. as i finished each sheet i handed it to my wife, who read, and handed it to my nephew’s wife, who read, and handed it to my nephew. for three hours the four of us read thus in silent absorption. those who know what it is to read books in galley proof, and have experienced channel crossings, will realize that few books will stand such a test. bambi is one of them. I particularly recommend it to sportsmen. march 16th, 1928 john galsworthy
The novel traces the life of Bambi, a male roe deer, from his birth through childhood, the loss of his mother, the finding of a mate, the lessons he learns from his father, and the experience he gains about the dangers posed by human hunters in the forest.

Vivien Leigh was one of the greatest film and theatrical stars of the 1930s, '40s, and '50s. Her Oscar-winning performances in Gone With the Wind and A Streetcar Named Desire have cemented her status as an icon of Hollywood.

From 1940 to 1960, Leigh was married to Sir Laurence Olivier, and together they were considered the royal couple of British theater. Indeed, their romance and acting partnerships captured the imagination of the public around the world.

Behind the scenes, however, Leigh's personal life was marred by manic depression. Largely misunderstood and subjected to barbaric mistreatment at the hands of her doctors, she would also suffer the heartbreak of Olivier's infidelity. Contributing to her image as a tragic heroine, she would die at the age of fifty-three.

Unlike previous biographies, Where Madness Lies begins in 1953 when Leigh suffered a nervous breakdown and was institutionalized. The tragic story unfolds as she tries to rebuild her life, salvage her career, and save her marriage.

Featuring a wealth of unpublished material—including private correspondence—Lyndsy Spence reveals how Leigh tragically fell victim to the draconian medical practices of the era.

"Good-Bye to All That: An Autobiography" by Robert Graves is a seminal work that vividly captures the harrowing experiences of a young British officer during World War I. Published in 1929, the book provides a candid and unflinching portrayal of life in the trenches, exploring the brutality and absurdity of war. Graves recounts his childhood, education, and early literary career, interweaving personal anecdotes with his wartime experiences. The autobiography delves into his friendships with notable figures like Siegfried Sassoon and critiques the societal norms of early 20th-century Britain. The title reflects Graves' profound disillusionment with the pre-war world and the irrevocable changes brought by the conflict. With its clarity, wit, and honesty, "Good-Bye to All That" remains an essential work in the canon of war literature, offering insights into the personal and collective trauma of a generation.

“The book’s strength is a thorough assessment of Dylan’s career, album by album, song by song. Both longtime fans and newcomers . . . will appreciate.” —Library Journal With Bob Dylan’s receipt of the Nobel Prize in Literature, his iconic status as an American musical, cultural, and poetic giant has never been more apparent. Bob Dylan: American Troubadour is the first book to look at Dylan’s career, from his first album to his masterpiece Tempest. Donald Brown provides insightful critical commentary on Dylan’s prolific body of work, placing Dylan’s career in the context of its time in order to assess the relationship of Dylan’s music to contemporary American culture. Each chapter follows the shifting versions of Dylan, from his songs of conscientious social involvement to more personal exploratory songs; from his influential rock albums of the mid-1960s to his adaptations of country music; from his three very different tours in the 1970s to his “born again” period as a proselytizer for Christ and his frustrations as a recording and performing artist in the 1980s; from his retrospective importance in the 1990s to the refreshingly vital albums he has been producing in the 21st century. “This concise examination of the Dylan corpus is especially good for younger generations who may want to better understand how a musician in his early seventies can still be so compelling and relevant in twenty-first-century America.”. —Booklist    “Fascinating . . . Highly recommended. All readers.  —Choice Reviews “A nearly album by album retrospective of one of the most culturally significant and musically influential musicians in modern history.” —Examiner “A must read for Dylan enthusiasts.”  —Journal of American Culture
