Beschreibung

The most learned of the Latin Fathers, Saint Jerome had an eventful life, spending time as a hermit, becoming a priest, serving as secretary to Pope Damasus I and later establishing a monastery at Bethlehem. His most ambitious achievement was his Latin translation of the Bible, the Vulgate, based on a Hebrew version, rather than the Septuagint. He believed that mainstream Rabbinical Judaism had rejected the Septuagint as invalid scriptural texts, due to Hellenistic mistranslations. Jerome’s numerous biblical, ascetical, monastic and theological works went on to have a profound influence in the early Middle Ages. Delphi’s Ancient Classics series provides eReaders with the wisdom of the ancient world, with both English translations and the original Latin texts. This eBook presents Jerome’s collected works, with illustrations, introductions and the usual Delphi bonus material. (Version 1)

A Christian case for natural burial

The promises of the Christian gospel are never more precious or more beautiful than in the context of death and burial. And yet current burial practices in Western society are archaic and impersonal. They fail to confront us with the reality of death, and they make it harder to process death or to grieve properly.

Kent Burreson and Beth Hoeltke have been teaching a Christian understanding of death and natural burial for many years. They argue that natural burial—laying the body into the earth in a way that allows it to decompose naturally—is not only better for the environment but is also a more accurate picture of Christian hope of the resurrection. Grounded in sound Christian teaching about death and burial, they advocate for natural burial and offer practical instructions for navigating the complex questions around burial practices.

Lay Me in God's Good Earth is not only an immensely practical guide to natural burial; it is also an application of the hope of the resurrection to those grieving the loss of their loved ones.

In the shadows of royal palaces and the gleaming splendor of ancient Israel, a tale of forbidden passion, treachery, and consequences unfolds. Lust and Betrayal: The Forbidden Love of David and Bathsheba explores one of the Bible’s most controversial and poignant stories, delving deep into the hearts and minds of two individuals whose fates were forever intertwined by desire, deceit, and divine retribution.
King David, the revered warrior and man after God's own heart, has conquered nations, but his most devastating battle is fought within the confines of his own palace. Bathsheba, the beautiful and elusive wife of a loyal soldier, finds herself ensnared by the irresistible power of the king's gaze—and soon, by his overwhelming desire. In a moment of weakness, David’s lust leads to a betrayal of his own integrity, the life of an innocent man, and the destruction of the peace he once knew.
As their illicit affair unfolds, the consequences ripple through their lives and the kingdom, bringing heartbreak, loss, and a profound reckoning with their actions. From the passion of their initial encounter to the painful aftermath of their sin, this story reveals the complexities of human nature, the peril of unchecked desires, and the hope of redemption in the face of devastating failure.
Through vivid narrative, Lust and Betrayal explores timeless themes of love, power, guilt, and forgiveness. In a world where fame and fortune offer no protection from the consequences of sin, can David and Bathsheba find a path to healing—or will they be forever haunted by their transgressions?
A gripping retelling of a biblical classic, this book invites readers to wrestle with the complexities of the human heart and the profound truths that come with facing the consequences of our actions.

Ivy Zimmerman is successfully navigating her life as a young Mennonite woman, one generation removed from her parents' Old Order Amish upbringing. But when her parents are killed in a tragic accident, Ivy's way of life is upended. As she deals with her grief, her younger sisters' needs, the relationship with her boyfriend, and her Dawdi and Mammi's strict rules, Ivy finds solace in both an upcoming trip to Germany for an international Mennonite youth gathering and in her great-great-aunt's story about Clare Simons, another young woman who visited Germany in the late 1930s.

As Ivy grows suspicious that her parents' deaths weren't, in fact, an accident, she gains courage from what she learns of Clare's time in pre-World War II Germany. With the encouragement and inspiration of the women who have gone before her, Ivy seeks justice for her parents, her sisters, and herself.

What is the essence of charismatic Christianity, a renewal movement that stresses the Holy Spirit's work, the church's use of spiritual gifts, and the significance of the supernatural? Helen Collins gives a novel summary explanation drawn from the spiritual gifts. Through Scripture and doctrinal reflection, she shows that charismatic spirituality is a coherent, reasonable, and rich tradition with much to offer.

Collins demonstrates how practicing spiritual gifts embodies a distinctive theology, making these practices carriers of doctrine. Using the Acts 2 narrative, she summarizes seven key emphases and associated practices: expectancy (prophecy), enchantment (miracles), encounter (healing), expression (testimony), equality (tongues), empowerment (evangelism), and enjoyment (worship). The result is a fresh introduction that is biblical, theologically robust, and practical, helping charismatic students to learn more about themselves and others to understand the movement and what it has to contribute to global theological discussions.
