France, which insulted the memory of the heroic old man, was on its knees before a child. September 12, an enormous crowd was surging around the palace of the Parliament in Paris. Little Louis XV. alighted from his carriage amidst acclamations, and formally entered the palace. He took off his hat, and then, replacing it on his head, said graciously: “Gentlemen, I have come here to assure you of my affection. Monsieur the Chancellor will acquaint you with my will.” And the first president responded: “We are all eager to contemplate you upon your bed of justice like the image of God on earth.”
“Princes are badly brought up,” says the Marquis d’Argenson. “Nothing flatters and nothing corrects them.” Ought not one to be indulgent toward a prince to whom his governor, Marshal Villeray, kept repeating on the balcony of the Tuileries: “Look, master, look at these people; well! they are all yours, they all belong to you.” The regent said to the little monarch: “I am here only to render you my accounts, to offer matters for your consideration, to receive and execute your orders.” The child thought himself a man already.

John Ruskin

John Ruskin was a Victorian-era writer, art critic, and social thinker who wrote extensively on political economy. He was critical of the industrialization and capitalism that were taking hold in Britain during his time, and he believed that these developments were causing great harm to both the natural environment and human society. 
Ruskin believed that the capitalist system was inherently flawed because it focused solely on maximizing profits and disregarded the well-being of workers, the environment, and society as a whole. He argued that the pursuit of wealth at all costs led to the exploitation of labor, the destruction of natural resources, and the degradation of art and culture. 
In response to these problems, Ruskin advocated for a different economic system that was more in tune with the needs of people and the environment. He believed that the economy should be organized around the principles of social justice, sustainability, and community. 
Ruskin's ideas were influential in the development of the Arts and Crafts movement, which sought to promote traditional crafts and design in opposition to the mass-produced goods of industrial capitalism. For many, bread was their primary source of sustenance, and its scarcity sparked anger and frustration across the nation.
This economic hardship revealed the inefficiency of the French monarchy in dealing with the crisis. King Louis XVI’s government, already deeply in debt from wars and lavish spending, was unable to provide effective solutions. The inability of the monarchy to alleviate the suffering of the common people, particularly in the face of rising food prices, further eroded public trust in the regime. The discontent simmered beneath the surface, particularly in cities like Paris, where the urban poor were most vulnerable to food shortages.
