Beschreibung

Extreme Weather Buildings tackles the critical challenge of designing resilient and sustainable architecture in an era defined by increasingly severe weather. It addresses how buildings can be adapted to withstand extreme conditions, emphasizing the integration of meteorological data and advanced construction techniques. The book reveals that conventional building methods often fall short in regions prone to natural disasters, necessitating a shift towards innovative, climate-resilient designs. For instance, the book explores how buildings can be designed to withstand extreme heat, hurricanes, blizzards, and droughts.

The book progresses from an introduction of extreme weather climatology to specific design strategies tailored for different climate challenges. It examines building forms, material selection, and energy-efficient systems, concluding with a practical overview of advanced construction methods like modular construction and 3D printing.

By bridging the gap between earth sciences, geography, and architectural engineering, this book provides a framework for creating sustainable, climate-resilient communities and informs policy-making.

In September 2005, the House of Representatives created the Select Bipartisan Committee to Investigate the Preparation for and Response to Hurricane Katrina. The Committee was charged with conducting "a full and complete investigation and study and to report its findings to the House not later than February 15, 2006, regarding-- (1) the development, coordination, and execution by local, State, and Federal authorities of emergency response plans and other activities in preparation for Hurricane Katrina; and (2) the local, State, and Federal government response to Hurricane Katrina."The Committee presents the report narrative and the findings that stem from it to the U.S. House of Representatives and the American people for their consideration. Members of the Select Committee agree unanimously with the report and its findings. Other Members of Congress who participated in the Select Committee’s hearings and investigation but were not official members of the Select Committee, while concurring with a majority of the report’s findings, have presented additional views as well, which we offer herein on their behalf.First and foremost, this report is issued with our continued thoughts and prayers for Katrina’s victims. Their families. Their friends. The loss of life, of property, of livelihoods and dreams has been enormous. And we salute all Americans who have stepped up to the plate to help in any way they can. "A must-read for anyone who loves Kruger and adventure." - Tony Park
WALKING WILD is not your typical safari - no game drives, no cool sundowners and definitely no fences. Instead, it's 605 km of dust, sweat and unforgettable moments as an unlikely group of strangers sets out to walk the entire length of Kruger National Park. Over six stages and three years, they walked from Crooks' Corner in the far north to Malelane in the south, averaging 20 km a day with heavy backpacks and only the wild for company.
Led by two armed guides, they braved blistering heat and violent storms. At night, as hyenas nosed their tents and lionesses strolled right through camp, some slept soundly - others lay wide eyed, waiting for dawn. They drank from murky trickles in dry riverbeds, navigated thick riverine bush teeming with hippo, buffalo and crocodiles, and slowly learnt to read the bush - from the smallest antlion to the distant roar of a lion.
But Kruger's wilderness is not without its challenges. Poachers - both criminal syndicates and those in search of bushmeat - move in the shadows, rivers bring pollution from beyond its borders, and conservation battles rage on. WALKING WILD captures the magic and the madness of life on foot in one of the world's most iconic national parks. It's a story of adventure, camaraderie and deep immersion in the wild - a journey that leaves no one unchanged.
WALKING WILD is a testament to resilience, discovery and the deep connection between people and nature. If you've ever dreamt of experiencing Kruger beyond the safari vehicle, this book is your ticket to the trail.

Despite their cultural influence, the grand narrative of the dinosaur story is rarely told. Most of us have heard of Stegosaurus and Tyrannosaurus, but these two dinosaurs lived more than eighty million years apart—a greater span of time than the entire post-T. rex history of the planet. Furthermore, we often know even less about the environments these animals lived in.

The Shortest History of the Dinosaurs tells the full story, a 230-million-year epic of small beginnings, spectacular golden periods, and eventual global domination—before an unthinkable asteroid event brought everything to a screeching halt. We learn that, for millions of years in the Triassic, dinosaurs were dog-sized—but slowly developing evolutionary traits like feathers and warm-bloodedness. In the Jurassic Period, these traits—and others like laying eggs and growing specialized air sacs—led to an era of rapid growth in dinosaur population and physical size. As Pangea continued to break apart, during the Cretaceous Period, dinosaurs traversed the globe, adapting to air and water—before a six-mile-wide asteroid hit Central America.

Using fossil discoveries and fresh understandings of genetics and evolution, author Riley Black reveals the startling relationships dinosaurs shared with each other, the land they lived on, other animal species, and the earth.
