Sinopse

Weapon Advancements explores the intricate relationship between civilization and the evolution of military technology, examining how tools of war have shaped societies, and conversely, how societal needs have driven technological innovation. From rudimentary hand weapons to precision-guided munitions and cyber warfare, the book traces key turning points, such as the advent of metallurgy and the gunpowder revolution, demonstrating how these advancements reshaped warfare and broader social, economic, and political landscapes.

One intriguing insight is how economic constraints and strategic doctrines often dictated the development and proliferation of weapons, highlighting that military technology is not solely the product of scientific ingenuity. The book adopts a chronological approach, progressing from prehistoric weapons and siege engines through the development of swords, armor, and fortifications in antiquity and the Middle Ages.

It then delves into the impact of the industrial era on naval warfare, mechanized armies, and air power, before addressing modern innovations like nuclear weapons and drone technology. By integrating historical accounts, archaeological findings, and technical specifications, Weapon Advancements provides a comprehensive overview, emphasizing the interplay between technology, strategy, and social context, making it valuable for military history enthusiasts and anyone interested in the evolution of warfare.

Covert - The Psychology of War...

After the tremendous success of The Spy Chronicles, A.S. Dulat and Asad Durrani participated in a series of conversations on the psychology of war and peace; these have evolved into this fascinating book, written with psychiatrist Neil K. Aggarwal.
Covert takes the reader right into the head of the two spymasters. Delving into their personal and professional trajectories that moulded them in the early years, the conversation traces the extent to which their Indian and Pakistani identities have defined them. Masterfully moderated by Aggarwal, the discussion then turns to the domain of international relations, exploring why the governments of India and Pakistan collaborate in certain areas, but not in others. What emerges is a remarkably forthright, provocatively honest appraisal of the peacebuilding process between the two nations that appear inherently hostile to each other but share so much in terms of history and cultural identity.
The dialogues in Covert reveal a deep camaraderie between Dulat and Durrani, who have headed the intelligence operations for their respective countries. But more importantly perhaps, it provides deep insights into the shadowy world of negotiation and subterfuge. It is an eye-opener and a must-read for anyone invested in peace and amity in South Asia.

    Articles of Confederation and...

Of all the celebrated documents in American history, one of the relics of history is the Articles of Confederation, which have been reduced to a footnote. In fact, Americans often overlook the years between the negotiation of peace in 1783 and the drafting of the Constitution in 1787, but to understand the Constitution, it’s necessary to understand why it was drafted in the first place.
After the Revolution, the new United States attempted to operate under the Articles of Confederation, which had been drafted in a time of war by men who were wary of Parliamentary abuses of power. Given that context, it should not be surprising that the national government the Continental Congress crafted during the Revolutionary War was particularly weak. During the war itself, the reason Congress could not pay the soldiers in the Continental Army was because it did not have the power to tax. General George Washington pestered the Continental Congress for provisions constantly, but they could only ask for money from the states.
By 1787, it became evident that the Articles of Confederation were inadequate for the new nation. With these problems hampering the national government under the Articles of Confederation and the threat of default on the nation's massive war debt looming, plans began being made to fix the problems of the Articles of Confederation. Thus, that summer a Constitutional convention was called, and each state sent delegates to Philadelphia. Among the delegates were prominent patriots and former members of the Continental Congress, including George Washington and Benjamin Franklin.
The Constitution was a decisive move away from the Articles of Confederation, which the proponents of the Constitution claimed promoted dissonance by giving states too much autonomy. They argued that a strong federal government ought to be empowered to maintain standing armies, provide for a national militia, and be able to levy direct taxes to support defense and provide prosperity.
