Sinopse

Wartime Famines explores the tragic intersection of armed conflict and mass starvation throughout history, highlighting how war-induced famines have reshaped military and political landscapes. The book examines the deliberate use of famine as a weapon, the unintended disruption of food systems due to conflict, and the subsequent political and military repercussions. Delving into various historical periods and geographical locations, the study reveals that famines are not merely collateral damage but significant factors affecting the trajectory of wars and their aftermath.

For instance, targeting food supplies has been strategically employed to weaken enemy populations, while warfare inherently disrupts agricultural cycles and humanitarian aid, leading to widespread starvation. This book uniquely emphasizes the agency of affected populations, showcasing their resilience and resourcefulness in the face of adversity.

Examining specific case studies, from ancient sieges to 20th-century conflicts, each chapter focuses on a particular famine, its unique circumstances, and the responses of warring parties and international organizations. The book's approach combines primary documents, military archives, government reports, and eyewitness accounts to provide a comprehensive analysis.

The book progresses by first establishing a conceptual framework, then moving to specific case studies, and finally analyzing the lessons learned for preventing future famines.

"In the land of ice and song, a mystical struggle for the ultimate power begins."

Woven from centuries of Karelian song and legend, The Kalevala tells the story of the creation of the world and the heroic deeds of the eternal shaman-bard Väinämöinen. At its center is the quest for the Sampo—a magical artifact of infinite wealth forged by the master smith Ilmarinen. As the heroes of the South battle the dark forces of Pohjola and its mistress Louhi, Lönnrot creates a tapestry of enchantment, tragedy, and ancient wisdom. Written in the distinctive "Kalevala meter" that inspired Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, this epic is a profound exploration of the power of words, music, and the natural world.

The Quest for the Sampo: The driving force of the epic is the Sampo, a mysterious mill that grinds out flour, salt, and gold. Its forging and eventual theft represent the struggle between civilization and the untamed wilderness, serving as a powerful symbol of Finnish prosperity and identity.

Why It Is a Cultural Masterpiece: The Kalevala did more than preserve folklore; it helped define a nation. Its unique trochaic tetrameter and its reverence for the "magic of singing" make it one of the most rhythmic and hypnotic works in world literature.

Emerging from France's catastrophic 1940 defeat like a bedraggled and rather sinister phoenix, the French State – better known to history as “Vichy France” or the “Vichy Regime” after its spa-town capital – stands in history as a unique and bizarre creation of German Fuhrer Adolf Hitler's European conquests. A patchwork of paradoxes and contradictions, the Vichy Regime maintained a quasi-independent French nation for some time after the Third Reich invasion until the Germans decided to include it in their occupation zone. Headed by a French war hero of World War I, Marshal Philippe Petain, and his later Prime Minister Pierre Laval, Vichy France displayed strong right-wing, conservative, and authoritarian tendencies, though it never lapsed fully into fascism until the Germans arrived to reduce its role to little more than a mask over their own dominion. Petain carried out several major initiatives in an effort to counteract the alleged “decadence” of modern life and to restore the strength and “virtues” of the French “race.” Accordingly, he received willing support from more conservative elements of society, even some factions within the Catholic Church.
Of course, not all French people proved willing to surrender to the Nazi invaders, however. While large numbers “collaborated” – working for German or Vichy companies to provide for themselves or their families – and some wholeheartedly backed the new regime out of opportunism, fascist conviction, or other motivations, many courageous French resisted the Nazis and the quisling Vichy state. At the same time, despite the legends, the French Resistance never grew into a single unified organization. Rather, it remained divided in several major and numerous minor factions, each with their own philosophy and agenda. While these factions all shared the same goal – opposition to the Germans their Vichy pawns – they viewed each other with some suspicion and sometimes cooperated only grudgingly.

The Voice of America (VOA) is the oldest and largest US government-funded international media organization. In 2020, Donald Trump nominated Michael Pack, a right-wing documentarian and close friend of Steve Bannon, to lead the US Agency for Global Media—the independent federal agency overseeing US-funded international media. During Pack's seven month tenure, more than thirty whistleblowers filed complaints against him, and a judge ruled that he had infringed journalists' constitutional right to freedom of speech.

How did such a major international public service media network become intensely politicized by government allies in such a short time, despite having its editorial independence protected by law?

Capturing News, Capturing Democracy puts these events in historical and international context—and develops a new analytical framework for understanding government capture and its connection to broader processes of democratic backsliding. Drawing from in-depth interviews with network managers and journalists, and analysis of private correspondence and internal documents, Kate Wright, Martin Scott, and Mel Bunce analyze how political appointees, White House officials, and right-wing media influenced VOA—changing its reporting of the Black Lives Matter movement, and the 2020 presidential election.
