Synopsis

Tunnel Warfare explores the often-overlooked world of subterranean conflict, revealing its profound impact on military history from ancient sieges to modern asymmetrical warfare. The book examines how tunneling techniques have evolved, from basic hand-dug passages used to undermine city walls to complex, engineered networks employed by insurgents and terrorist groups. It also highlights the psychological toll on soldiers and civilians facing the unique terrors of fighting in the dark, where the enemy could be anywhere. This study provides a unique perspective by emphasizing the continuity and adaptability of tunnel warfare across different eras. Ethical considerations, such as the targeting of underground infrastructure, are also addressed. By drawing on primary sources and archaeological findings, the book traces the use of tunnels from antiquity, through the industrial revolution and into the age of modern insurgent warfare. It culminates by examining the future and ethics of subterranean combat, making it valuable to those interested in military history, strategy, and the evolving nature of conflict.

Celia Paul's Letters to Gwen John centers on a series of letters addressed to the Welsh painter Gwen John (1876–1939), who has long been a tutelary spirit for Paul. John spent much of her life in France, making art on her own terms and, like Paul, painting mostly women. John's reputation was overshadowed during her lifetime by her brother, Augustus John, and her lover Auguste Rodin. Through the epistolary form, Paul draws fruitful comparisons between John's life and her own: their shared resolve to protect the sources of their creativity, their fierce commitment to painting, and the ways in which their associations with older male artists affected the public's reception of their work.

Letters to Gwen John is at once an intimate correspondence, an illuminating portrait of two painters, and a writer/artist's daybook, describing Paul's first exhibitions in America, her search for new forms, her husband's diagnosis of cancer, and the onset of the global pandemic. Paul, who first revealed her talents as a writer with her memoir, Self-Portrait, enters with courage and resolve into new unguarded territory—the artist at present—and the work required to make art out of the turbulence of life.

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the landmark book Freakonomics comes this curated collection from the most readable economics blog in the universe. It’s the perfect solution for the millions of readers who love all things Freakonomics. Surprising and erudite, eloquent and witty, When to Rob a Bank demonstrates the brilliance that has made the Freakonomics guys an international sensation, with more than 7 million books sold in 40 languages, and 150 million downloads of their Freakonomics Radio podcast.
When Freakonomics was first published, the authors started a blog—and they’ve kept it up. The writing is more casual, more personal, even more outlandish than in their books. In When to Rob a Bank, they ask a host of typically off-center questions: Why don’t flight attendants get tipped? If you were a terrorist, how would you attack? And why does KFC always run out of fried chicken?
Over the past decade, Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner have published more than 8,000 blog posts on the Freakonomics website. Many of them, they freely admit, were rubbish. But now they’ve gone through and picked the best of the best. You’ll discover what people lie about, and why; the best way to cut gun deaths; why it might be time for a sex tax; and, yes, when to rob a bank. (Short answer: never; the ROI is terrible.) You’ll also learn a great deal about Levitt and Dubner’s own quirks and passions, from gambling and golf to backgammon and the abolition of the penny.

At the zenith of its power, Britain, the 'Workshop of the World', dominated the globe with military might and commercial acuity. The celebration of Queen Victoria's sixty years on the throne was carefully positioned to highlight the country's strength, especially in the face of rising competition from other nations. The festivities brought together, in a show of force, the Queen's widely extended family, foreign dignitaries, diplomats, foreign royals and world leaders.
Extraordinary pageantry, parades and royal receptions served to dramatise the unparalleled significance of the event. The most important occasion, however, was the Devonshire House Ball, given at huge expense by the Hanover-born German 'Double Duchess' of Devonshire. The Duchess – having married not one but two English Dukes – took to the task with alacrity, bringing together an extraordinary group of nobles, politicians, plutocrats, influential foreigners and bankers, hosting the most famous party of the century: a fancy-dress ball with a guest list of the 700 social, political, cultural and prominent 'celebrities' of the day.
A specially commissioned tent – equipped with hand-painted backdrops, the most technically advanced cameras and lighting, along with realistic props – was set up in the magnificent gardens to capture the glamorous guests.
Many of the exquisite costumes – all of pre-eighteenth-century characters – were preserved by photograph and are shown here, colourised for the first time, to give us a sense of the wondrous, glorious occasion of the Ball.
