Beschreibung

Siege Engineers explores the crucial role of military engineering in ancient and medieval warfare, highlighting the ingenuity behind siege weapons and fortifications. The book delves into how engineers overcame defensive structures, examining the evolution of siege weaponry like battering rams and trebuchets, and the principles of defensive fortifications, from earthen ramparts to complex stone castles. Understanding these elements reveals not only the technical skills of past societies but also their strategic thinking and resource management.

The book progresses chronologically, starting with rudimentary ancient techniques and moving through Roman strategies, medieval innovations, and the decline of traditional siege warfare. It emphasizes that military engineering was a dynamic field driving technological advancement and influencing history. For example, the development of the trebuchet significantly altered siege capabilities during the Middle Ages.

What sets Siege Engineers apart is its focus on the engineers themselves, offering a fresh perspective beyond battles to examine the technological and human factors determining victory. By exploring their motivations and innovations, the book provides an insightful overview of a topic often overlooked in traditional military histories, connecting it to fields like archaeology and architectural history.

This book “देवताओं का मौन (The Gods have gone silent)” is a philosophical journey into the very living heart of non-dual Vedanta.
Today our modern existence rests on the loss and disappearance of the fact-value distinction that embody science and technological development at the expense of what it means to be a living being. It traces the essence of Vedanta through the streets and crossings of modern India and engages with extraordinary living masters in trying to answer some of our most pressing spiritual questions such as:What is this dwelling and who is this dweller. How is the dweller to chalk his way to his being?Who are the modern Rishis and how are we to become one?If Truth cannot be acquired or learnt, then how can it be transmitted.
How do we know it, If it is the indescribable, undefinable, unutterable, unspeakable, incommunicable, ineffable; beyond words, beyond description, then by what and in what are we to seek its body.

Christianity was not a state religion for its first three centuries, and it was only when Emperor Constantine the Great declared it so in the early 4th century that the Church was faced with the thorny problem of state-sanctioned violence. The first major Christian authority to justify the use of arms in defense of Church and State was Augustine, Bishop of Hippo, who wrote in the 5th century, “They who have waged war in obedience to the divine command or in conformity with His laws, have represented in their persons the public justice or the wisdom of government, and in this capacity have put to death wicked men; such persons have by no means violated the commandment, ‘Thou shalt not kill.’”
This opinion gained increasing influence in Western Christianity, though in the East, the attitude was (and continues to be) more nuanced. War was tolerated as a regrettable necessity in a world wounded by sin but never blessed. Canon law enacted in the Byzantine (Eastern Roman) Empire tended to treat soldiers who had killed as sinners needing to repent, and Bishop Basil of Caesarea (d. c. 330) believed that they needed to abstain from receiving communion for three years after battle. It was not that that the Eastern Roman Empire was a particularly peaceable state–far from it, in fact: it was engaged in almost continuous warfare for its entire existence. However, its conflicts were mostly defensive in character, fighting barbarians, Persians, or Muslims, and the idea of consecrating arms for the cause of Christianity was considered alien to its spirit.
At the Council of Clermont in July 1095, Pope Urban II canonized religious war by urging Western Europe's nobility to take up arms in defense of the Byzantine Empire against the Muslims, thus launching the Crusades, and religious military orders such as the Knights of Saint John, the Templars, and the Hospitallers arose.

This highly readable illustrated biography on the Percy Tenantry Volunteers has been written with exclusive access to the current Duke of Northumberland's treasure trove of archive records. This book is for anyone interested in military history, especially Revolutionary and the Napoleonic war period, and for those looking at the local history of Northumberland, and especially Alnwick Castle.
The history of Britain's conflict with France between 1793 and 1815 is well documented. Nevertheless, one aspect that has scant coverage, is that of the role of Volunteers. In 1798, afraid of impending invasion by France's all-conquering armies the British desperately needed to defend their shores. To The Call of Bugles reveals, for the first time, how among those who stood forward in Home Guard style military bodies, there was no finer example than that of the valiant Percy Tenantry Volunteers, created by the 2nd Duke of Northumberland, General Hugh Percy. This amateur body of men, 1,500 strong, consisting of cavalry, artillery and riflemen, was put together, trained, armed, dressed and operated by General Hugh Percy. This book provides stories from the original volunteers, an in-depth understanding of how such a corps was organised and reveals how they were fashioned into an elite and innovative fighting force.
