Beschreibung

Pirates Raids explores the vital role that pirates, privateers, and the early United States Navy played in shaping America's destiny. It examines maritime conflict along the American coastline, revealing how the fledgling nation navigated treacherous waters to secure its place in global trade.

The book highlights the challenges faced by the young republic as piracy threatened economic stability and international trade, while privateering blurred the lines between legitimate warfare and state-sponsored piracy. The rise of U.S. naval power was essential for safeguarding American interests and projecting power on the world stage.

Beginning with the historical context of piracy in the Atlantic world, the book analyzes specific pirate attacks and privateer actions along the American coasts. It further examines U.S. government policies and strategies to combat piracy, including establishing the U.S. Navy.

The book avoids romanticizing piracy, focusing on the economic, political, and military factors that shaped this era. Ultimately, Pirates Raids argues that the struggle against piracy and the use of privateering were instrumental in shaping U.S. naval policy and establishing the nation as a credible maritime power.

The first full history of the highly trained and ruthless civilian volunteers secretly trained across Britain to be deployed in the case of a German invasion. The narrative surrounding Britain’s anti-invasion forces has often centered on ‘Dad’s Army’-like characters running around with pitchforks, on unpreparedness and sense of inevitability of invasion and defeat. The truth, however, is very different. Top-secret, highly trained and ruthless civilian volunteers were being recruited as early as the summer of 1940. Had the Germans attempted an invasion they would have been countered by saboteurs and guerrilla fighters emerging from secret bunkers, and monitored by swathes of spies and observers who would have passed details on via runners, wireless operators and ATS women in disguised bunkers. Alongside these secret forces, the Home Guard were also setting up their own ‘guerrilla groups’, and SIS (MI6) were setting up post-occupation groups of civilians – including teenagers – to act as sabotage cells, wireless operators, and assassins had the Nazis taken control of the country. The civilians involved in these groups understood the need for absolute secrecy and their commitment to keeping quiet meant that most went to their grave without ever telling anyone of their role, not even their closest family members. There has been no official and little public recognition of what these dedicated men and women were willing to do for their country in its hour of need, and after over 80 years of silence the time has come to highlight their remarkable role.

This book offers a vivid, ground-level narrative of how the Ottoman Empire navigated two turbulent centuries of war, diplomacy, and reinvention. From the Treaty of Zsitvatorok to the French invasion of Egypt, this book follows shifting frontiers in the Balkans, the Caucasus, and the Arab provinces; the rise of provincial notables; the transformation of the Janissaries; the monetized pressures of silver and global trade; the aesthetics and politics of the Tulip Period; and the Empire’s steadily sharpening view of Europe. It explores how Russia and Austria surged, how forts and bridges became social institutions, how markets whispered the first warnings of defeat and recovery, and how knowledge—maps, manuals, and newspapers—turned into instruments of power. Bringing cities, soldiers, scholars, and merchants to life, the book reframes “decline” as an intense school of adaptation that culminated in the shock of 1798 Egypt—an ending that seeded the next Ottoman century of reforms.

Peggy Noonan's Wall Street Journal column has been must reading for thoughtful liberals and conservatives alike. Now she issues an urgent, heartfelt call for all Americans to support the next President. Because it is not the threats and challenges we face, but how we face them that defines us as a nation.
The terrible events of 9/11 brought us together in a way not seen since World War II. But the stresses and divisions of the Bush years have driven us apart to a point that is unhealthy and dangerous. Today, Noonan argues, the national mood has swung the other way and it is well past time for politicians to catch up. We long for leaders who can summon us to greatness and sacrifice, as they did in the long struggles against fascism and communism.
In this timely essay, written in the pamphleteering tradition of Tom Paine's Common Sense, Noonan reminds us that we must face our common challenges together—not by rising above partisanship, but by reaffirming what it means to be American.

Journey into the heart of one of the greatest collapses in human history. Collapse and Conflict: The Fall and Fracturing of the Roman Empire (3 in 1) is a powerful collection that captures the drama, chaos, and slow disintegration of a civilization once thought invincible. As the Roman Empire crumbled beneath the weight of corruption, invasions, economic turmoil, and internal strife, the echoes of its decline would shape the course of Western civilization for centuries to come.
This volume includes three richly detailed works. The Fall of Rome provides a sweeping account of the final days of the Western Empire, examining the pressures both from within and beyond its borders. Glory and Decay explores the transformation of Rome’s grandeur into fragmentation, as cities crumbled, institutions weakened, and emperors rose and fell in rapid succession. Finally, The Roman Empire Uncovered digs deeper into the myths and realities of the Empire’s decline, revealing the lesser-known events, key figures, and regional shifts that contributed to Rome’s ultimate disintegration.
Blending historical narrative with insightful analysis, this trilogy is ideal for readers passionate about ancient history, the rise and fall of empires, and the enduring legacy of Rome. Whether you're a student, scholar, or curious reader, these pages offer a captivating exploration of a world on the edge of collapse—and the birth of what came next.
