Synopsis

"Guerilla Warfare" explores the multifaceted nature of unconventional warfare, a strategy where smaller, agile forces challenge larger, conventional armies. The book dives into the historical significance and core principles that allow guerilla fighters to leverage terrain, surprise, and local support. It reveals that successful guerilla campaigns depend not only on military tactics but also on socio-political dynamics, such as popular support and ideological alignment. The study examines the evolution of both guerilla tactics and counter-guerilla strategies across different historical periods and geographical locations. By dissecting historical examples, the book highlights key elements like leadership, logistics, and intelligence, and how these translate into effective asymmetric conflict. Readers will appreciate the book's comprehensive approach, which goes beyond basic military strategy to analyze the broader context in which guerilla warfare unfolds. Beginning with core concepts and progressing through historical case studies, "Guerilla Warfare" offers a detailed yet accessible analysis. The book argues that unconventional warfare acts as a potent equalizer, enabling weaker forces to achieve strategic goals against seemingly insurmountable odds. It concludes by addressing the ethical dimensions and contemporary implications of this complex form of military conflict.

How I Found the Lost Atlantis!...

The article on which this audio book is based was published in the 'New York American' on October 20th, 1912.
The author, Dr. Paul Schliemann, was the grandson of Heinrich Schliemann (1822 - 1890), a founder of modern archaeology. In this famous archaeological hoax he makes outrageous and sensational claims about the lost continent Atlantis, and his grandfather’s research.
The text was written in an age when many of the Victorian adventure writers, like H. Rider Haggard in Britain, Emilio Salgari in Italy and Karl May in Germany topped reading lists. In 1912, the jungle calls of Tarzan echoed through American pulp magazines for the very first time.
Paul Schliemann capitalizes on the contemporary craze for his grandfather’s archaeological discoveries, for lost worlds and legendary characters like the queen of Sheba and Prester John. Since 1907, Howard Carter had been excavating in Egypt, and in 1922 Carter made his historical discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun.
Paul Schliemann’s article is highly entertaining, and features passages reminiscent of Indiana Jones. Michael Henrik Wynn, the editor of the educational net radio stream Historyradio.org, gives a spirited performance of what has become a classic and much loved hoax in archaeological circles.

When Left Moves Right - The...

Over the past two decades, postcommunist countries have witnessed a sudden shift in the electoral fortunes of their political parties: previously successful center-left parties suffered dramatic electoral defeats and disappeared from the political scene, while right-wing populist parties soared in popularity and came to power. This dynamic echoed similar processes in Western Europe and raises a question: Were these dynamics in any way connected? When Right Moves Left argues that they were. And that the root of the connection between them lies in the pro-market rebranding of the ex-communist left—the key explanatory variable. This book asserts that, though the left's pro-market shift initially led to electoral rewards, it had a less straightforward impact on left-wing parties' electoral fortunes in the long run.

The book draws upon different levels of analysis: cross-country observational data, case studies, and individual-level experimental surveys. It argues that scholars should incorporate the economic policy dimension when explaining the demise of the left and the rise of the populist right in the region. It also examines important parallels between the dynamics of Western and postcommunist countries by arguing that the idiosyncrasy of Eastern European politics has been overstated in scholarly literature.

Artha-shastra is about generating food, i.e. wealth, by creating goods and services; Kama-shastra is about indulging our hungers with this food. Dharma-shastra insists we consider the hunger of others, while Moksha-shastra is about outgrowing our hungers, in order to be detached and generous. Together, these four Hindu shastras provide a framework within which human action, its purposes and consequences, can be defined; together, they validate human existence and give it meaning.
In Dharma Artha Kama Moksha, Devdutt Pattanaik uses his unique understanding of mythology to provide an accessible and lucid guide to the Hindu way of thinking, with short essays that are crisp expositions of important concepts.
