Beschreibung

"Carthaginian Navy" explores how Carthage, initially a small outpost, rose to challenge Rome through its formidable naval power. The book details how the Carthaginian fleet was integral to the city's economic strength and expansion, playing a vital role in the Punic Wars. It examines the evolution of ship design, from early vessels to the advanced quinqueremes, which allowed Carthage to control vital trade routes. Carthaginian naval tactics were so effective that they posed a direct and ongoing threat to Rome. The book provides a comprehensive look at Carthage's maritime strength, drawing upon archaeological evidence, Punic inscriptions, and accounts from Greek and Roman historians. It investigates the logistical challenges of maintaining a large fleet, including timber sourcing and crew management, and explores the social and economic impacts of naval service. The book progresses chronologically, beginning with Carthage's origins and moving through key naval battles, examining the strategies of Carthaginian admirals, and ultimately analyzing the reasons for Carthage's naval decline against the expanding Roman Republic. This approach offers a nuanced understanding of Carthaginian society and maritime power.

WINNER OF THE TATA LITERATURE LIVE FIRST BOOK AWARD (NON-FICTION) 2021

Maharashtra, India's richest state by GDP, has its eyes set on becoming the country's first trillion-dollar economy by 2025. At the same time, Marathwada -- a historically backward part of the state adjoining the distressed Vidarbha region -- has seen a surge in farmer suicides.
At the heart of the crisis is a cyclical drought that has persisted for almost a decade. Relief packages and loan waivers have not reversed the trend. On the contrary, the stories of dystopia grow more tragic every year as thousands of farmer families flee to the big cities, while those who stay back are plagued by bad credit and crop loss.
Landscapes of Loss tells the story of Marathwada through the accounts of its people: marginal farmers, Dalits, landless labourers, farm widows and children. It lays bare the complex factors that have brought the region to this pass -- a story representative, in many ways, of the agrarian unrest in large parts of rural India.

It might come as a surprise to some people but there are actually quite a few sex scenes in Louisa May Alcott's Little Women. In this episode, we shall dive into 19th-century courtship and how Alcott writes about courtship etiquette. Laurie is based on Alcott's ex and Friedrich to a man she wanted to marry. In this book we will examine Jo's relationships and how they correlate with Alcott's personal life. Louisa May Alcott had a huge crush on her father´s best friend philosopher Waldo Emerson. Louisa wrote love letters to him but she never sent them and she used to sit under his window singing "Migon´s song". Mignon´s song is a song from Goethe´s novel, Wilhelm Meister´s apprenticeship, which was one of Alcott´s favourite books. Emerson was one of the many models for Friedrich. The main model was philosopher Henry Thoreau who merited Louisa´s lifelong affection.

As a long-time, die-hard Little Women fan, I LOVE this podcast! I stumbled upon it while doing research for a book series I was working on, and I am addicted! Niina is super knowledgeable in all things LW, from the book(s) to the movies and author Louisa May Alcott’s real life. I love that the discussions are based on the book and highlight the differences (sometimes controversial) between the original and newer adaptations. Highly recommended for anybody who loves getting lost in the world of Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March.

He needed a miracle. He got an offer he couldn't refuse.
Marek, the gym coach, is drowning in debt. Filip, the film student, has a camera and a solution that seems too good to be true.
A few photos for a project? Easy money.
Posing shirtless? For a price, he can handle it.
On his knees in front of the camera? The number on the check is too big to ignore.
Marek thought he knew his limits. He thought he knew himself. But every line blurs under Filip's relentless gaze. He’s supposed to be in control—he’s the coach. But he's quickly learning the intoxicating pleasure of surrender.
This was supposed to be about survival, but it's becoming a seduction he can't fight.
This 11,000-word standalone short story is a spicy deep dive into desperation and discovery. It contains: a "straight" hero in a tight spot, a very convincing student, high-stakes gay-for-pay, explicit first-time scenes, camera play, and a happy-for-now ending with no cliffhanger.
