Synopsis

Artillery Barrages explores the devastating impact of sustained artillery bombardments throughout history, from World War I's trench warfare to modern conflicts. It examines both the physical destruction and the profound psychological effects on soldiers and civilians, arguing that artillery warfare has continuously tested human endurance. Readers will gain insights into how military strategy, technological innovation, and psychological resilience have adapted in response to increasingly powerful artillery. The book uniquely integrates technological, psychological, and ethical dimensions into a cohesive narrative.

Did you know that the relentless pressure of artillery fire led to "shell shock," now known as PTSD, highlighting the severe psychological toll of war? The evolution of artillery, from rudimentary beginnings to precision-guided munitions, showcases significant technological advancements and tactical shifts. The book progresses through historical context, psychological impact, and ethical considerations, providing a comprehensive understanding of artillery's role in shaping warfare.

In an era of terrifying unpredictability, we race to address complex crises with quick, sure algorithms, bullet points, and tweets. How could we find the clarity and vision so urgently needed today by being unsure? Uncertain is about the triumph of doing just that. A scientific adventure set on the front lines of a volatile era, this epiphany of a book by award-winning author Maggie Jackson shows us how to skillfully confront the unexpected and the unknown, and how to harness not-knowing in the service of wisdom, invention, mutual understanding, and resilience.

Long neglected as a topic of study and widely treated as a shameful flaw, uncertainty is revealed to be a crucial gadfly of the mind, jolting us from the routine and the assumed into a space for exploring unseen meaning. Far from luring us into inertia, uncertainty is the mindset most needed in times of flux and a remarkable antidote to the narrow-mindedness of our day.

In laboratories, political campaigns, and on the frontiers of artificial intelligence, Jackson meets the pioneers decoding the surprising gifts of being unsure. Each chapter examines a mode of uncertainty-in-action, from creative reverie to the dissent that spurs team success. Step by step, the art and science of uncertainty reveal being unsure as a skill set for incisive thinking and day-to-day flourishing.

    Song Dynasty - Innovation and...

The Song Dynasty (960–1279) emerged from a period of political fragmentation and military strife known as the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period (907–960). Following the collapse of the Tang Dynasty in 907, China was divided among competing warlords and regional states, each vying for power. The unification of China under the Song Dynasty marked the beginning of a new era of stability, economic prosperity, and cultural flourishing.
The dynasty was founded by Emperor Taizu (Zhao Kuangyin), a capable military general who seized power in 960 through a relatively peaceful coup known as the Chenqiao Mutiny. As the commander of the Later Zhou army, Taizu was persuaded by his loyal officers to take the throne and establish a new dynasty. Unlike previous rulers who relied on military force to maintain control, Taizu implemented policies aimed at reducing the power of the military aristocracy while strengthening the centralized government. One of his first major reforms was ensuring that top military commanders were replaced by civilian officials, significantly reducing the likelihood of future military coups.
Although the early Song rulers sought to consolidate power within China, they faced constant threats from neighboring states. The Khitan-led Liao Dynasty controlled much of the northern frontier, while the Western Xia and later the Jurchen-led Jin Dynasty posed additional challenges. The Song, unable to achieve military dominance over these rival states, often resorted to diplomacy, alliances, and even paying tribute in exchange for peace. This reliance on diplomacy over warfare became a defining characteristic of Song foreign policy.

    Southern Beauty - Race Ritual...

    Elizabeth Bronwyn Boyd

In a trio of popular gender rituals—sorority rush, beauty pageants, and the Confederate Pageant of the Natchez (Mississippi) Pilgrimage—young white southern women have readily ditched contemporary modes of dress and comportment for performances of purity, gentility, and deference. Clearly, the ability to "do" white southern womanhood, convincingly and on cue, has remained a valued performance.

Based on ethnographic research and more than sixty taped interviews, Southern Beauty goes behind the scenes of the three rituals to explore the motivations and rewards associated with participation. The picture that Boyd paints is not pretty: it is one of southern beauties securing status and sustaining segregation by making nostalgic gestures to the southern past. Boyd also maintains that the audiences for these rituals and pageants have been complicit, unwilling to acknowledge the beauties' racial work or their investment in it.

Southern Beauty moves beyond representations to show how femininity in motion—stylized and predictable but ephemeral—has succeeded as an enduring emblem, where other symbols faltered, by failing to draw scrutiny. Continuing to make the moves of region and race even as many Confederate symbols have been retired, the southern beauty has persisted, maintaining power and privilege through consistent performance.

The Holy Grail, the head of Christ, the elixir of life, vast treasure and powerful political conspiracies. All of these and more are part of the tale of that enigmatic warrior brotherhood we know as the Knights Templar. It is said they discovered a great secret buried deep beneath the Temple of Solomon and gathered together in-order to protect it from generation to generation. Over time they were feared by all their enemies, not least of which was eventually the Catholic Church itself. A powerful and mighty brotherhood with real hidden secrets that spanned across the known world and even beyond into the new world of the Americas. And all of this from the humble origins of a handful of supposedly poor warrior monks.

The truth is that the Templars had found great treasure. It gave them immense wealth, property and power. Their strength was so great that monarchs of Europe feared them and some plotted their demise.

But their treasure was more than material wealth; it was also philosophically, mystically and spiritually profound. So profound that it was in fact the ultimate secret that has been hidden and protected by secret societies ever since. Prepare to discover the truth.
