Synopsis

In "Curious Myths of the Middle Ages," Sabine Baring-Gould masterfully intertwines folklore, superstition, and historical analysis to explore the rich tapestry of medieval legend. The book delves into various myths, ranging from the myth of the unicorn to the lost accounts of the Holy Grail, providing insightful commentary on how these tales reflect the societal fears, beliefs, and values of the time. Baring-Gould's narrative style is both engaging and thorough, employing a mix of academic rigor and a storyteller's flair, which invites readers to not only learn but also to ponder the origins and implications of these enduring legends in a medieval context. Baring-Gould, a prolific writer and noted folklorist of the 19th century, drew upon his extensive background in anthropology and theology to craft this compelling examination of myth. His dedication to recording oral traditions and unearthing historical foundations enabled him to present a captivating synthesis of myth and reality. His personal experiences traveling through Europe and engaging with various cultures further enriched his understanding of the socio-religious undercurrents influencing medieval narratives. For readers captivated by the enchanting world of folklore or those seeking to better understand the historical roots of modern myths, "Curious Myths of the Middle Ages" is an indispensable read. Baring-Gould's exploration serves not only as a reflection of the past but also invites contemplation on how these age-old beliefs resonate within our contemporary landscape. Immerse yourself in this scholarly yet accessible work to rediscover the myths that once shaped the medieval mind.

"...an excellent primer about the operations in and around the Anzio beachhead. Students of operational art, multinational operations, and amphibious warfare will find Staiger’s narrative interesting and thought-provoking." — Military Review

The Allied amphibious operation codenamed Shingle was launched in late January 1944. It was opposed by German forces in the area of Anzio and Nettuno. Success depended on the element of surprise, and the speed with which the invaders could build up strength and move inland. This was understood by General Mark Clark, commander of the US Fifth Army, but not fully understood by his subordinate commanders.

This German account focuses on the landing at Anzio as it was the only one that failed to achieve its objective of smashing the German defense and achieving operational freedom of movement. The battle lasted over six weeks, with mistakes made by leadership on both sides, and consequently also great sacrifice by soldiers on both sides. But the operation was not a German success either, and attempts to prevent the creation of a strong bridgehead failed. Ultimately the Allies would reach Rome, and the Allies applied lessons from this battle to facilitate the success of Overlord, launched five months later.

While not complete, as the author did not have access to some of the war diaries of higher levels of German command, this is still one of the best German accounts of Operation Shingle and is here translated into English for the first time.

The intriguing, in-depth story of the most powerful woman in Canadian politics. *A NATIONAL BESTSELLER*

Catherine Tsalikis traces Chrystia Freeland's remarkable journey from the northwestern Alberta town of Peace River to Moscow, London, and New York, where she spent two decades as a journalist, to the halls of Parliament Hill as deputy prime minister and finance minister in Justin Trudeau's Liberal government. Ambitious and talented with a work ethic to match, Freeland has had an impressive run since she entered politics in 2013: spearheading major trade negotiations, expertly navigating relations with an erratic US president, speaking out about human rights abuses in Saudi Arabia, and standing up to Vladimir Putin's aggressions in Ukraine.

With her impeccable research, seasoned perspective, and accessible style, Tsalikis brings Freeland's story to life. The defining moments and experiences that shaped Freeland's particular worldview illuminate the answers to larger social questions: how to live a good, useful life; how to hold fast to guiding principles; how to break through glass ceilings. This is a unique behind-the-curtains look at Canadian politics through the story of a trailblazing woman.

Riots are an aspect of American history that do not show up much in history textbooks, except for famous disturbances like the Boston Tea Party or the infamous New York City draft riots of 1863. The reality is that the country has experienced thousands of riots, from early colonial times through to the present, and the issues leading up to some of the riots may seem quite peculiar to modern Americans. Americans have rioted over who was the best actor, and to free pirates from jail. Americans have rioted against bad working conditions, for the 8-hour day, against immigrants, for and against civil rights. Americans have had riots over eggnog, which Bible to use in schools, and when their favorite sports teams have won or lost.
For example, in 1788, the deadly Doctors' Riot occurred in New York City over the robbing of graves to provide medical students with bodies to dissect. An even stranger riot was the Eggnog Riot of 1826, when cadets at the United States Military Academy at West Point rioted over Christmas eggnog.
In 1844, a debate in Philadelphia over whether to allow Catholic students in public schools to read the Catholic Douay Bible rather than the King James Version sparked two savage riots, known as the Bible Riots. In the City of Brotherly Love, the Bible Riots caused a number of casualties, and two churches and a seminary were burned to the ground.
The 1857 Dead Rabbits Riot featured gang violence in New York City, but it could only be understood by knowing about a previous police riot, and that for a time there were two separate police forces in New York City. The police were as apt to club each other as they were to club rioting gang members. The 1870 and 1871 Orange Riots were over the July 12 Orange parades that memorialized the 1690 Battle of the Boyne. Despite the battle being almost 200 years earlier, Protestants and Irish Catholics were still fighting over it in New York City in an extremely bloody way.

Death has very little meaning - 17 April 1980
    • Is there a totally different way of approaching the whole turmoil of life?
    • As long as the centre is creating darkness, and thought is operating in that dark
ness, there must be disorder, there must be everything as society now is. To
move away from that you must have insight.
    • Insight can only come about when there is a flash which abolishes not only the
darkness but the creator of darkness.
    • Human beings have been acting according to one pattern, responding to
hatred by hatred and so on. There are those few, perhaps many, who did not.
Why has this division taken place?
    • The man who is living in darkness can move away at any time to the other. That
is the point: at any time.
    • What happens to a mind that has no conflict?
