Beschreibung

Sina Wheeler is your typical woman, living with her roommate, working from home, and trying to make it day by day. A regular at the Druid’s Grove Sina has a few unusual friends, including a witch named Oona, but her best friend is her roommate, Gia. And Gia may just be a vampire. Or a Goth sunk so far into the lifestyle that she’s harming herself. Sina dismisses Gia’s behaviours and pale appearance as a phase, after all, her friend lost her parents at an early age. Who else would have the right to be depressed and into darkness? Sina is pretty sure her dismissal of the pale skin and Goth look is all wrong when she finds Gia squeezing a steak for dear life in the middle of the kitchen one night. Can Sina save her friend? And will the help come from a doctor trained in medical problems or Oona, the all-knowing witch? Sina is facing a battle for her friend’s life that may turn into a battle for her own. Can she win against something she has no understanding of?

November 1866: The grisly murder site in London's East End is thronged with onlookers. None of them expect the calmly efficient young woman among them to be a medical doctor, arrived to examine the corpse. Inspector Richard Tennant, overseeing the investigation, at first makes no effort to disguise his skepticism. But Dr. Julia Lewis is accustomed to such condescension . . .

To study medicine, Julia had to leave Britain, where universities still bar their doors to women, and travel to America. She returned home to work in her grandfather's practice—and to find London in the grip of a devastating cholera epidemic. In four years, however, she has seen nothing quite like this—a local clergyman's body sexually mutilated and displayed in a manner that she—and Tennant—both suspect is personal.

Days later, another body is found with links to the first, and Tennant calls in Dr. Lewis again. The murderer begins sending the police taunting letters and tantalizing clues—though the trail leads in multiple directions. Lewis and Tennant struggle to understand the killer's dark obsessions and motivations. But there is new urgency, for the doctor's role appears to have shifted from expert to target. And this killer is no impulsive monster, but a fiendishly calculating opponent, determined to see his plan through to its terrifying conclusion . . .

The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes is the final set of twelve (out of a total of fifty-six) Sherlock Holmes short stories by Arthur Conan Doyle first published in the Strand Magazine between October 1921 and April 1927.
The first British edition and the first American edition of the collection were both published in June 1927. However, they had slightly different titles. The title of the British collection was The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes (hyphenated "Case-Book"), whereas the title of the American edition was The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes ("Case Book" as two words). Further confusing the issue of the title, some later publishers released the collection under the title The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes ("Casebook" as a single word).
