Mary never thought an afternoon at the library would change her life—until a quiet stranger sparks her fascination. 
The circumstances that led her to the library hardly matter (though they might involve the sudden but expected demise of an overweight dachshund).  
As someone who spends her days wiping sticky fingerprints and suspiciously urine-coloured spills from indoor playground equipment, Mary never expected to become her workplace's reluctant carbon monoxide safety expert. But saying "no" has always been her weakness, especially when someone needs help. 
Perhaps that's why she's drawn to him—the pale, quiet man who appears at the library like clockwork. Does he suffer from a wasting disease? Or does he simply escape into fictional worlds to avoid the inevitable disappointment of genuine connection? 
Instead of introducing herself like a normal person, Mary channels her growing obsession into writing elaborate fantasies where he's a lovestruck Prince and she's his bold Mistress. It's the perfect arrangement—until the day he unexpectedly pulls out a chair for her, forcing Mary to decide if bringing her steamy daydreams into reality is worth the risk.
