Synopsis

Dr. Ryan Robinson should have been a statistic. Instead, he became a successful owner of multiple dental and medical practices—all before the age of forty. In 2015, with his first practice thriving, it looked like he already had “the life.” But inside, despite the external success, he had hit a personal rock bottom, burned out on dental work, and he realized he wasn’t truly passionate about the work. After asking himself, “Why am I here on this earth?” he recalibrated to find the answer and think bigger than ever before.

‘You Only Need Permission from Yourself’ is an honest and empowering look at what it means to heal, grow, and live life on your own terms. Through personal stories and deep reflection, Jaynette Lancaster invites readers to question the silent rules they’ve been taught and to let go of the belief that anyone else holds the key to their happiness or success. This book speaks directly to those who’ve been told to stay quiet, play small, or wait for permission. Jaynette challenges that mindset with warmth and clarity, drawing from her own journey through heartbreak, emotional abuse, professional pressure, and the raw work of rebuilding. She shares how she found strength in vulnerability, clarity in solitude, and peace in choosing herself—over and over again. Each chapter explores a different piece of the healing puzzle, from understanding emotional conditioning to navigating mental health, building resilience, and reclaiming your voice. Jaynette’s message is clear: your story matters, your voice is valid, and your life belongs to you. Written with honesty, compassion, and grit, ‘You Only Need Permission from Yourself’ is both a mirror and a guide for anyone ready to stop seeking outside validation and start living with intention. It’s not just a book. It’s a call to finally choose yourself—and mean it.

Filled with stunning artwork, this biography of comics pioneer Jack Kirby by an artist who worked closely with him is “a treasure” (The Cleveland Plain Dealer).

“As a teenager, future television and comics writer [Mark] Evanier became an assistant to Jack Kirby, one of the foremost artists in the history of American comics. Kirby played a major role in shaping the superhero genre, not only through his innovative, dynamic artwork but through collaborating with Stan Lee to create classic Marvel characters like the Fantastic Four, the Hulk and the X-Men. Evanier has now written this magnificently illustrated biography of his mentor. Rather than employing the academic prose that one might expect from an art book, Evanier, a talented raconteur, tells Kirby’s life story in an informal, entertaining manner . . . he brings Kirby’s personality vividly alive: a child of the Great Depression, a creative visionary who struggled most of his life to support his family. The book recounts how Kirby was insufficiently appreciated by clueless corporate executives and close-minded comics professionals. But the stunning artwork in this book, taken from private collections, makes the case for Kirby’s genius. A landmark work, this is essential reading for comics fans and those who want to better understand the history of the comics medium—or those who just want to enjoy Kirby’s incredible artwork.” —Publishers Weekly

Louis Armstrong once claimed that “Every time I close my eyes blowing that trumpet of mine—I look right in the heart of good old New Orleans…It has given me something to live for.” This statement conjures an image which most anyone familiar with jazz music can recall: Armstrong clutching his trumpet forcefully, his eyes closed in a manner that distances him from his physical surroundings in favor of a perfect harmony between the man and his instrument. As Armstrong alludes to in this remark, this connection also speaks to the enduring influence of his New Orleans background, which informed his musical style and indeed continued to live on through his music.
In 1956, Duke Ellington was featured on the cover of Time Magazine after a bravura performance at the Newport Jazz Festival that summer. This remains one of his most iconic achievements, and a landmark for jazz music as a whole (only four jazz musicians were ever displayed on the cover of Time). At the same time, however, this recognition stands as one of the prevailing ironies of Ellington’s career, as he was deep into the latter stages of his performing life by this point.
While those two men became jazz’s most famous performers, others rose as legendary singers. If Billie Holiday wanted to become a jazz singer, she chose the best of all eras in which to attempt it. A wave of great jazz and jazz/pop crossover artists swept over the United States from the 1920s through the 1950s, generating a golden age for the genre. This wondrous jazz era was well represented by both black and white master artists, men, women, vocalists, and instrumentalists, and Billie Holiday has stood the test of time as well as any, despite struggling with an environment that easily could have doomed such aspirations.

A firsthand account of aerial warfare from a USAAF veteran who flew in fighter bombers during WWII, perfect for military aviation enthusiasts.   George Webster, a flight radio operator on a B-17 during the second world war, gives readers a first person account from the inside of a bomber plane. Focusing on the 92nd Bomb Group, 8th Air Force, including missions to the Schweinfurt ball-bearing plant and Berlin, Webster’s memoir is vivid and intimate, describing the bitter cold at high altitudes, gut-wrenching fear, lethal shrapnel from flak, and German fighters darting through the bomber formation like feeding sharks. One of the first accounts of being shot down over Sweden, The Savage Sky is as close as you can get to experiencing aerial combat while still staying firmly planted on the ground.   “If you want to know what it was really like to fly in a bomber—read this!” —George Murdoch, Armchair Auctions
