Synopsis

Inspector Wexford searches for answers after an elderly woman is murdered in this “spellbinder” from a New York Times–bestselling author (Publishers Weekly). When Chief Inspector Wexford enters the parking garage, the woman is already dead, slumped between two cars, concealed under a velvet shroud. The inspector doesn’t even notice her as he drives away. Only later, when he sees on the news that an old woman was garroted in the shopping mall garage, does he realize how close he was to discovering the body. In a case that starts with a hidden corpse, the truth will be dangerously elusive.   Before Wexford can sink his teeth into the elderly woman’s murder, he is nearly killed himself—by a politically motivated car bombing targeting his daughter. With the inspector in the hospital, the case falls to his partner, the intrepid Mike Burden, who must solve both mysteries before the shopping mall killer strikes again.   The winner of three Edgar Awards, Ruth Rendell was one of the finest mystery authors of the twentieth century. Inspector Wexford was one of her most beloved creations, and The Veiled One is another “stunning” entry in the series (Publishers Weekly).

When it comes to love, everyone is compromised
The murder scene looks depressingly ordinary at first; a home-invasion shooting of a real-estate agent. But Detective Erin O'Reilly has a nose for trouble, and this case smells all wrong. It's bad enough that the victim is tied to several sleazy property deals, but the worst of it is the sole witness to the crime; the dead man's girlfriend is Lieutenant Webb's ex-wife.
Erin is no stranger to personal complications, but Webb's entanglements threaten to derail the whole investigation. With her commanding officer compromised, she and her K-9 Rolf will have to take the lead as they try to tear open a case involving street thugs, car thieves, a shady trainer of fighting dogs, and a paranoid white-collar guy in way over his head. It's shaping up to be an ugly dogfight in the streets of Brooklyn.

In The Bughouse Affair, former Pinkerton operative Sabina Carpenter and her detective partner, ex-Secret Service agent John Quincannon, undertake what initially appear to be two unrelated investigations. Sabina's case involves the hunt for a ruthless lady "dip" who uses fiendish means to relieve her victims of their valuables at Chutes Amusement Park and other crowded places.
Quincannon, meanwhile, is after a slippery housebreaker who targets the homes of wealthy residents, following a trail that leads him from the infamous Barbary Coast to an oyster pirate's lair to a Tenderloin parlor house known as the Fiddle Dee Dee. The two cases eventually connect in surprising fashion, but not before two murders and assorted other felonies complicate matters even further. And not before the two sleuths are hindered, assisted, and exasperated by the infamous Sherlock Holmes.

"Set in Italy and full of lush location details, The Midnight Rambler is an utterly masterful interweave of compelling characters, relentless action, and swift, unpredictable plot twists. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel from the first page to the last. Mark my words, Don Carr has everything it takes to become our next Robert Ludlum." -New York Times Best-Selling Author William Kent Kreuger
Often mocked as a "water cop," Environmental Protection Agency special agent Sophie Grant has faced countless dangerous situations while chasing criminal polluters, from boarding tankers at sea to Somali refugee camps. But when she is assigned to Italy's tourist-filled Amalfi Coast in pursuit of a toxic-waste-dumping cartel, the fearless female EPA agent finds herself in the crosshairs of legendary Camorra assassin Il Mezzanotte Ramingo-the Midnight Rambler-and is forced to do the most harrowing thing of all: ask her disgraced ex-cop father for help.
But like the deadly polluted water flowing below the sun-splashed Amalfi bedrock, nothing is as it appears. As this action-packed eco-thriller unfolds, it is revealed that the CIA aims to use her as bait. But Il Ramingo hasn't killed seemingly impossible-to-reach politicians, judges, and Camorra rivals for years without learning to sniff out a trap.
